Hot Rods Alt.Question

How much belt wrap on the alt.pulley? Did the car come with a alt.? A larger pulley will give more belt contact.

Dan, I don't know what you mean by belt wrap? Yes the car came with an alt, but since the car sat so long I replaced the alt. when I replaced the water pump and fuel pump too.Thanks Bruce.

 

Belt wrap.

Bruce, in the picture above you can see that pulley #1 and pulley #3 have a large potion of the pulley with the belt wrapped around it. These pulleys are far less likely to slip under load than pulley #2 or especially pulley #4 that has very little belt wrap. This diagram is more likely for a serpentine belt setup but the same principal applies for any V-belt setup. The more pulley surface that has belt contact (belt wrap) the less likely it is to slip.
