A friend of mine came up with a cool idea, he got a alt.made a tube the size of the body & added a back plate to make it look like a generator!!came out really nice but its on an old hemi & the alt. was alittle too big!!looks too bulky.
Heres my question, does anyone know of any smaller dia.alt.off of a toyota or something that had a internal regulator that would be more on the size of a generator?
Maybe use a old electic motor casing for a cover!!
I know i'm not really explaining this too good but it really looks good & it seems like a simple solution to the repeated question of " putting a alt. inside a generator"?
I'll try & see if i can get a picture of it.

One of the biggest reasons for alternator failure is overheating due to the lack of air flow through the casing.
That's why alot of times (rebuilt) Gm alternators fail because they are putting higher amp guts into the older style casings. The older casings do not have sufficient size vents in them to allow for cooling and the larger amperage setup puts out much more heat.By putting a alternator in a casing I'm afraid you will have this problem.
Even if the casing is vented well, I would think it would be like placing insulation around it.
I would use the early 60's style 12 volt generators if you want something more traditional.
    here's another choice.
