I need help with the choice of using a single wire altenator on my daily driver. Can some give me the pros and cons .Or direct me to a thread that has the answers. Thanks in advance.
Type in (one wire) in the search function for thread ***les, there are many with good info...lots of reading.
I fitted an Audi a4 120amp alternator to my galaxie in place of the generator. Ran a wire from side terminal of generator light in dash to the D+ post on alternator so light works as it should and a 200amp cable to starter solenoid. It was very very cheap of eBay and works perfectly . It also has an inbuilt regulator
Like others have stated, one wire is easier, but not the best. Spend some time with the link below, as well as all the tech info Mark Hamilton provides on this and other electrical subjects. http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/onewire-threewire.shtml
The one wire alt was invented for tractors and earth movers. It was adapted to cars because it is simpler. Hook up one wire instead of 3, big deal. The standard 3 wire is better and cheaper. But the 1 wire will work ok. Sometimes you have to rev the engine up, right after you start, to get the alt to kick in. Other than that they work pretty much the same. O ya, no alt light with the 1 wire so you should run an ammeter or volt meter.
I use the standard 3 wire GM that came on my motor ... the lower right bulb below my instrument panel is the alternator lamp; I also have a voltmeter at the center right.
