Right now it's only these 5 AWB Plymouths. Our pockets are only so deep (deep - haha)<!-- / message --><!-- sig --> so just these. I'm hoping we can do more, but right now these are it.
Sure, it wasn't the prettiest car around. But what would you expect from an original S/S 1965 Dodge that weighed 1700lbs (just over HALF of what it weighed when Chrysler built it) and ran in the 7s at 178 MPH in late 1967/early1968? Ya, that's right... Everybody else that ran those numbers at the time was doing it in tube framed and fiberglass bodied "bathtub" floppers. Yes, Greer did eventually retire his '65 "Tension" Dodge to run a flopper Barracuda under the same name sometime in 1968. And he went on to be the first NHRA Funnycar points Champ in 1974. Says something about how hard he ran with all of his cars. Rest In Peace Shirl!
Don't get me wrong........I have the utmost respect for Shirl Greer and was well aware of his Funny Car Championship. But even if his '65 car ran 6's, it would still be considered one of the ugliest Matchbash cars ever built, but Shirl was a hard racer through and through, and probably wouldn't give a rat's ass what the car looked like......as long as it won races. Don't forget that it was even called ugly by a major magazine in a feature story during it's heyday.
There is a b&w pic of "Tension" here: http://www.prostockhemi.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=2084 Marty
Here's my heap.Body pulled off the assembly line and cut / altered. No VIN, no zinc plating and never been run!!! They painted it metalflake blue and never finished the chassis work. The only paint on it is primer and the metal flake blue really faded now. Rear wheels moved foward 12" same w/ front. Every part I have for it it '65- '66 vintage down to the Doug's weed burner headers. I already put a new front sub-frame w/straight axle because they messed up the original tube sub-frame w/ Pinto suspension done in the 80's. Next is rear suspension w/ Olds or 8 3/4, mono- leafs and ladder bars 48" long. Then 1 3/4" roll cage and new tubs. Hopefully I can get back to work on it soon. God I love these cars!!!!
Hey Dale! The old Rosedale Rocket is looking great! You've come a long way with this car and I know what's it's like - great job! I can't wait to hear that 289 scream! I guess this will make two AWB's on the road in SoCal? Hurry up, Storm Warning needs a cruise buddy! Team Stormy
Shot this one this morning, before I dropped it off fo its hopefully last trip to the paint shop. Can you tell its an altered wheelbase? Bill- love that color on yer Nova!!! Here's one of the next in line for a cut and alter: I still want to have a fastback Nova, and this one is a perfect candidate.
You guys on the West Coast are putting some really nice cars together, both of these are just great. Jon
Very cool, I too have a '66 Chevy II Wagon that's been a Stocker and Super Stocker for the past 30+ years. Are you on Steve's Nova Site too ?
LAST CHANCE for FREE Shiping & Handling on any of the 5 altered wheelbase 1:18 cars coming - as they are expected here next Monday (08/30/10) and the shipping offer expires when the cars do arrive. Some have called and ordered more this week, adding to their cars reserved. Just a final reminder, and a THANK YOU for the orders. Almost here!
I just went through the entire 32 pages of this thread, and wow. I have to say thanks to AxleArmada66 for starting it, and thank you to all those posting photo's and sharing info. It's helped our 1:18 altered wheelbase project, and I'm sure statisfied many past drag racers cravings. I'm not sure how long it took me, but it was time very well spent. If you haven't looked through it all - I suggest you TAKE the time. It's well worth it...
Awesome cars, I remember building some of them in model form back when I was a lot younger,, thanks for the pics.
Thanks Glenn - glad you like her! You can see our entire build from start (June 2008) to current at www.alteredwheelbasenova.com. I think we have about 1,300 photos posted. Hope you enjoy! Funny Cars Forever!
