in my opinion , altered wheel base cars really started drag racing , drew the crouds in , all the smoke chrome and noise ,the flash , all the big names were really carved in stone from then on , and you guys that had the pleasure of witnessing this period and still have those pictures of those cars launching , the noise , well you that was the period that really drew you in , im really happy you were there and took those old pics and videos and share them here on this site .. thank you im no expert , but when i see threads like this , ill gladly take an hr and a half to go through this entire thread .. u guys rock

this thread needs to come back into circulation!

just bought a 65 Coronet AWB. Not a historic car. Has the WRONG wheels!

from my observations, the Mopars ran five spokes, Cragars and even some steelies on the rear. Mostly five spokes and Cragars on the front. I did not see many running aluminum slots. Didn't see any SuperTricks, but they came out later

I am thinking Cragars on front, for sure. Maybe Cragars or steelies on the rear.

    any suggestions?

also, I need wheels! 10's for the rear.

  5. landy ran cragars on all 4 corners of his 65 coronet some teams used magnesium front wheels and sox and martin had keystones on alot of thier cars

All the images I have seen of Dick Landy's 1965 Coronet have Torque Thrusts on all 4 corners or Torque Thrusts in front and Cragars out the back. The cars must have had their wheels swapped pretty regularly considering how many different combinations show up in period photographs.

  8. i aggree with you skywolf on them changing wheels around alot landy was sponserd by cragar but im not sure if that was in 65 or if it came later i know in 67 he was sponsered by them

i have seen pics of his 65 coronet with the torque thrust style wheels also

They mostly ran 6"-8.5" wide wheels. The thought was that with skinnier wheels you could lower the pressure without the tread cupping and leaving you run on the outer edges. Look at Phil Bonners Daddy warbucks and also the Bob Ford "The Quiet one" Galaxie they ran 6" magnesium D Spoke american's as did a lot of A/FX MUSTANGS. 10" wide wheels were not common on these cars.

Narrow Torq Thrusts. The rears appear to be D's and the front has the straight spokes ?

I remember seeing Godzilla at the Springnationals in Colombus a few times. Mid to late 70's. And a little later at Quaker City, I think. It was black everytime I saw it, and not an exhibition wheelstander. Very cool car that leaves an impression for sure. I think it may still be around, but I can't confirm that.

& thanks to all the posters, luv the AWB's!
