I pulled my stock Delco distributor and replaced it with a Joe Hunt Scintilla based magneto.
It fits and works great but the wire routing is less than ideal.
it would be much better if the plug wires exited the cap four right side and four left..
    is there such a thing?

  3. None that I remember seeing. That would mean if there is, it's not common. :)

Only option I can think of is have it converted to an OXC with an external coil. Here’s the OXC cap, not the same look but it gets you some clearance if that’s what you need.

Joe Hunt Magmetos site > Categories on left side > caps > automotive > vertex …. View parts top 2 … they don’t show the 6 cyl cap but it’s available at parts stores (so is the adapter and 8cyl)

I must be missing something, all I see in that configuration are external coil caps.

another other issue yet to be worked out is tach drive,
I swapped out the 1/4 sweep electronic that was working with the stock points distributor for a full sweep mechanical tach.
not a big deal, just one more thing.

Not period, But a button cap Allen might allow the cable (tach)clearance..

yes, that is my thought too, it will need a little trimming on the hold down too.. or a counter sunk allen bolt.

either will mean pulling the cable to adjust timing, again not a big deal..

I always thought that bowl of Spaghetti back there was one of the cooler parts of running a mag. 7mm wires do give a cleaner appearance.
Is there a reason that you can't run the wires out of one side of the cap or the other, instead of the back? Obviously the front is out of the question.

An old racing trick to stop misfiring was to modify the Vertex with the "big cap". I hunted this down a while back.

The distributor cap used is Ford, though I only noted down the part number for the HEI distributor that it is robbed from (Cardone 84-2669), as per the image below.

I've never made the modification, but suspect someone here has. I think @lippy shows one here:

It doesn't look like he has any room for that monster of a cap.

^^^^^ Not only that. How do you send the discharge from below to the plug wire terminals above?

I can't even imagine Paul wanting to run a modern looking cap on his otherwise period perfect car....

Paul, I'm glad you're going to work this out. Another thing to plaigerize for the Whatever project.

  19. Why not rotate the Mag 90 Degs so the leads either come out the Left or Right hand side?

    Point taken. My bad.

Would a shielding hood make the wiring neater Paul? Those are closer to period correct. Photos below are mine, to suit a six-banger.
