I've posted this in another thread...I use...and swear by Lizardskin. I've now done three cars...I will never use insulation that is thick and unrolls.
Lizardskin is not the cheapest, and not the easiest...but it is the best at sound deadening and preventing heat...and it certainly doesn't come in rolls. Besides, spraying a credit card thickness makes mounting seat tracks, seat belts and anything else that you need to a lot easier..no need to cut the 3/8" sticky stuff out of the way first.

Now then, most everything in this thread is unroll and glue down (or up)...Lizardskin is a spray-on type...using a body schutz gun...it requires covering areas so that they do not get coated (a lot like masking for a paint job), it's not "messy," unless you're careless with the gun. It cleans up with soap and water and thins with water.

It sprays well (blak only...will not soften up once it cures- about 24 hours) and will coat anything with a nice thickness (a credit card thickness is recommended and quite thick enuff do to the job)...it is also recommended the surface be sprayed with epoxy sealer/primer first, which I always do.

The interior in my brother's '54 Caddy was the guinea pig...we sprayed floor, trunk and roof (headliner)...it killed the road noise and heat from the floor...the top is actually cool to the touch despite being painted green (dark colors asorb heat). I have now done my '55 Caddy's interior and complete under-floor (before putting it back on the frame).

This is a personal recommendation from just another car guy that has used it and swears by it...if you want a quiet car and the heat from the firewall is killing you, use Lizardskin...if not, take it for what's that worth...

  3. ok from a stereo instaler for numerous friends with that bass crap , they didnt want to use dynomat so we ended up usung r-blox and it worked really good so if your trying to dampen the sound and keep it isolated use that stuff it works and its cheaper than dynomat...

I helped a friend shoot lizard skin on his Chevy. He used the sound deadener stuff and the heat blocker stuff, two differnet kinds. It's definately not cheap, he's gotta have at least $500 or more in it, including the special (for him) spray gun he had to buy to shoot it. Yeah maybe it ended up credit card thickness with just the sound deadener stuff. He shot it in the engine compartment/firewall, and all the interior and ceiling of his car. You gotta mask every thing off like crazy, the stuff has way more overspray than you'd expect. Ask me how I know :D

Is it quieter/less hot? Well, it seems to have less of an echo inside after it was sprayed(without an interior in it). Hard to say if it's quieter cuz he runs open lakes pipes. I don't think I've ridden in it on a hot day so I can't tell you if it's cooler.

Considering all the F-ing hassle it was to get the stuff(distributors are far and few between, even here in Los Angeles!) and the shipping he paid on it was atrocious...hmmm for my money I'd say I'd go with something else. If money was no object, i'd probably use this with another sound deadener.

My only other experience with sound deadener is in my daily driver, where I had a dynamat knockoff installed in teh door panels. It makes them close wtih a clunk like a mercedes, but also seems like the extra weight sags the hinges a little (makes sense). I don't really notice much of a difference with the outside noise either, but it supposedly makes the mid-range speakers sound lower. YMMV

  6. Morton bed liner. Two part, spray on. I use it on every car I do, underside and inside. 150-200 bucks per car. About 1/8" thick. Comes off with a heat gun and scraper, but you'r gunna to be there a while!

  7. I'm in the process of putting new front floor pans in my '54, so I've found this thread very interesting. I work with a kid that does competition stereo crap in his free time. When I talked to him about sound deadener, he recommended FatMat. He said that they also use houshold carpet padding. You know, the stuff that looks like a million pieces of colored nerf all glued together.

So, here's my plan. Being frugal, I'm going to cover the floor with one of those DIY roll on beadliner kits, then a layer of the foam/ rubber, then new carpet. I think it will work well. Of coarse, anything is better than what I had before- nothing.

  8. I use the stuff from Homo Depot(Reflectix)and had good results.
I put it everywhere(well not there:D )and its deadens the sound and heat really gooder.
On the floor I put it down first then the 3/8"black carpet underlay, then the carpet, works great.
I use the 3M spray on adhesive, you gotta spray the insaulation and the body, let it setup for a minute then stick it on.....Shiny

whats the difference between fat mat and rattletrap? rattletrap seems thicker, better but maybe a bitch to put in the car? may not shape as good as the thinner stuff?

its for a model a so its not like i have crazy curves, etc.

Saw a '32 recently with Lizard skin in the trunk area. It was very thin in reality, but worked well for deadening. I have never used it or even priced it, but it was nice in this particular car.

Bought some stuff called Hushmat, seems similar to the Dynomat product, we'll see. I'll give some feedback on the install in a couple of weeks after I acually get it in the car. The car will have been apart for nearly 2 years by the time it's drivable again, so I won't be able to give any usefull before and after info on noise (especially with all the changes, even discounting memory issues), but I can certainly bring you guys up to speed on install difficulty and if there is any lingering smell issues.

If you spent 10 minutes reading http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ you'd know that Fatmat is nothing more than Peal N Seal from Home Depot/Lowes- but ALOT cheaper and no shipping. ANd the best way to do if your going cheap.

But there is a big difference between these products. Especially whether they are asphalt based (fatmat etc.) or not. And it also depends on the temps your car may live in. Head to the last page of the above personal review site and read the conclusion. It will save you a great deal of time and money. To use the better non-asphalt deadeners (dynamat etc.) be prepared to spend $500 to $600 for a medium sized car.

But having spent days removing the asphault type undercoating from inside my 1949 car - I DO NOT want that smell back into my car. Nor do I want that mess when it melts in the CA sun.

Do yourself a favor and read the above site. It explains why different people in different areas of the US swear by certain types that may fail in your area. It's all about the weather and asphalt or no asphalt.

(I wonder though about pvc insulation tape and simple aluminum tape. The pvc insulation tape must be rated to high temps as it is used to wrap around pvc for hot or cold water pipes to insulate it. And it's a closed cell foam that doesn't smell and must cut sound. It's about 1/8 think. I'll have to read the packaging and see what it says.)
