    Hey guys,

I noticed the alternator bracket on my 54 is kinda beat up and bent. The alternator sits kinda crooked in there. I tried looking for a replacement but couldn't find one.

Any ideas? has anyone used a different bracket that they had good results with?

    Thanks guys

Since your '54 had a generator originally and has been converted to an alternator the bracket is probably a modified piece, probably the best bet to adapt would be a late 60's early 70's Ford truck with a six.Ford Tractors used the 223 for quite a few years but I'm not sure if the later ones had alternators.

I had a hard time finding one that worked well, so I just made it from piece of 1.5" x 1.5" x .25" angle 6.25" long. The ears are pieces of the same angle cut at a slant. The top bracket is from an S10 ('85 I think). It's modified but works like a charm and holds everything square and solid.

ah nice yeah the top bracket is what i need. i think the one i got is the stock generator bracket. you can kinda tell its a little bent in this picture. How did you modify the S10 bracket? I might just try to find one of those.

If I remember right, it came off a 4 cyl. I used a 2 lb hammer and a vise to modify it. I flatted out the tip a little and put a deeper arch in it. Take your time and don't try to bend it all at once. It took me about 30 minutes to finesse it into proper shape.

awesome thank you sir. looks like i'm gonna have to steal your idea for the bottom bracket too. the kid that had my 54 before me didnt do a very good job fabricating that bottom bracket. i just pulled the alterator and the bracket he had on there broke a little TOO easy.

I used a 78 Pinto alternater on the 215 in my 53 Ford. The bottom bracket is the 0riginal six cylinder. I removed a little bit of the metal from the alternator to move it forward so it would line up, and then put a spacer to fill out the rest of the bracket. Bent the top bracket so it would line up. It's been on the car for over 20 myears with no problems.

alright so i got the new bottom bracket fabricated but the alternator sits higher so now the stock top bracket doesnt work...figured that would happen, so i got a curved bracket coming in the mail that i hope will work out. thanks again chopd top for the ideas. i had my roommate help me with it. he's a welder by trade so he did most of the work. check out the awesome welding on the old bracket...yikes.

    old busted *** bracket...

also! i got bored the other day and figured i'd try some pinstriping. Ive been striping random panels andold skateboards for a while but never a car. here's what happened. everything is the same or as close as i could get on both sides. i figured i'm gonna paint the car eventually so if i fuched it up no big deal. im not the best but turned out pretty alright!

    thanks guys!

i ordered a universal top bracket from autozone. i was already ordering stuff to do the master cylinder swap so i figured i'd try it. i'll probably have to modify it but hopefully it'll work. if not i'll start hunting around s**** yards i guess haha.

JeffB2 I have seen that thread and bookmarked it. I'll probably get on that as soon as i do the master cylinder swap. I have so many little projects on this thing. I just want to drive it before it gets cold again haha! I just need a solid week off work to get all the little stuff done and then i'll be cruisin.

so anyways...a little progress today, the top alternator bracket i ordered came this morning and it works after some cutting, grinding and drilling...

Now all i need to get her back on the road for now is a longer fan belt I think. I did notice a pretty bad oil leak. I think it's coming from where the filter is. I thought I left an extra O ring on when i did the last oil change but i pulled the filter off and i didnt. everything looks good...super confused as to why it'd be leaking that bad all of a sudden. unless im wrong and its coming from the pan but i dont think so, or im an idiot and didnt tighten the filter enough. either way...its probably that or a gasket or something silly and i'll figure it out.

    more pictures.

i had to cut the bracket and drill a new hole. didnt mess it up...that one hole had to be offset a little for it to work.

here it is on the car. once i get that new fan belt on there everything should line up perfect. i just need to go play the "find the right size" game at the parts store.

Uglysteve, that thing looks great and a whole heck of a lot stronger than that old one!!! You could always do the old rope trick with the belt....wrap it around the pulleys to get the size so you don't have to guess at the parts store. :D

Good job on your bracket. As far as your oil leak, I just got done with that game on my 223. Everytime I would plug one hole another would crop up.

I first noticed oil collecting around the side cover, changed the side cover gasket and found some of my original gasket to be completely gone. This slowed down my leak but didn't solve it.

My next plan of attack was to change the oil pan gasket. While under the vehicle, I found all of my oil pan bolts loose! I did not change the gasket, but torqued them all down good. Again, this significantly slowed my leak but did not solve it.

I later found that my oil pressure sender was bad and leaking through the sender itself.

After getting a new sender ($7 shipped from rockauto.com!) the only leak is a slow leak from the drain plug gasket and I can live with that until my next oil change.

You know the old Ford saying? "Ford's don't leak, they are just marking their spot"

    Jeff,

I marked probably 15 different parking spots at work testing to see if I fixed my leak. I had a giant puddle in my garage, but I wasn't going to clean that up until I got the leak fixed.
