    Hello HAMB …
Slowly putting my 57 GMC truck back together with a sbc instead of the straight six. Putting on my new tuff stuff made in Cleveland Ohio alternator, dropped a washer because I am all thumbs and in falls into the alternator Pop the back off to retrieve the washer and now the two magnets will not stay in place to allow me to put the alternator back together. Is there a trick or tool I need or is it junk now. Take a look at the pics and any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 2. See the little hole in the ceramic brush holder? There's a corresponding hole in the outer case. Straighten a paper clip, push the brushes into the holder beyond the hole and push the paper clip in from the outside hole to the inside hole, holding the brushes in. Reassemble the case and pull out the paper clip. Done!

…are you kidding me! In can be clocked incorrectly? I thought about it briefly as I was putting it back together. I was (incorrectly?) thinking it was like a fuel pump. Tell me more please.

What Johnny meant by clocking the alternator refers to where the ears on the front half (with the bolt holes) is bolted to the rear section so the your wiring harness plug doesn't interfere with valve cover, brackets, etc. or simply the harness reaches the alternator.

It can go together in any 4 positions that the bolts allow and still work as intended. However, did you take note of how the two halves were bolted together before separating?

I did not…I marked on the case where the ground tab was attached and put it back in place. When I mounted it, it looks like it will clear everything relative to wiring. Was there something else I should have done? Guessing next time mark both halves before separating?

Don't forget to pull the brush retaining pin, paper clip, or whatever you used, out.
