1952-59 Ford Alternator location ???

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by 1stGrumpy, Jul 16, 2012.

  1. I am in need of some help, PLEASE! Started working on my '57 Ranchero this week-end, putting the front of the engine back together so I can check condition of the motor. Here is where I'm at...
The 302 came out of a 1978 F150, the timing chain cover has been replaced with a RTCF-302A. I installed a new waterpump (1969 Mustang) and after a lot of cussing, temper tantrums and digging through my Ford engine stash, I finally got a combination of upper and lower pully's that lined up. I did a quick wiring job to a remote ignition switch, starter solinoid and battery and fired her up. No smoke, no knocks and the motor seems to run great! Great, I thought, now I'll go ahead and hook up the charging and cooling system's. Now we've gotten to the problem, I don't know where the alternator goes and I can't find any good pictures of a complete engine! By the shape of the cooling fins it must go on the right side of the engine, but does it mount high or low? I'm trying to use as much of the original parts as possible, I 'm a cheap ******* plus I don't like the billet **** that's out there! Sooooo... what did you guy's do (that run 302's) and do ya have any pictures? Thanks... Grump

One easy and inexpensive way is the factory way, but I cant tell you what years. There was a 7/16 bolt that goes through a small triangular shaped bracket, through the alternator, and then about a 3 1/2 inch long spacer right in to the right head. The adjusting arm came from underneath. Use plenty of anti seize on the 7/16 bolt, the whole length.

ive had mine on both sides of my 302, used the factory triangle piece just flipped around. i made a mounting bracket and got a long pivot arm from autozone for 25 bucks

  4. I'll have to dig through the parts that I got with it and hopefully find that triangular bracket. I got several of adjusting arms. Thanks guy's...
