Hey fellas, I installed my 1 wire GM alternator today. Dont have any wires hooked up though. Do I just run a wire from the back of the alternator to the positive battery side of the starter solenoid? Also, do I need to use an inline fuse or anything? Its a 110 amp alternator. As always, your help is appreciated. Gotta get this done before 8 am. Im taking the car to get exhaust installed. Keepin my fingers crossed that I dont get rearended this time. Thanks guys. Rocky
hey dragon knucks i also have a 110 gm one wire on my 54 i just ran a thick gauge wire with no fuse to the pos side of battery works just fine !!!! thats the way my cousin did his 50 plymouth also and my buddys 50 ford
if your running a 110a alt. you need a minimum of a 8 gauge wire with heavy lug style ends crimped and solderd on. you might use a 10 gauge temporarily but would change it out when posible. i know the car should most likely never hit a 110 amp draw to make it full charge. but it is possible .
what have you done with your old Gennie wiring? might want to check you dont have any live wires (with key on/off) 'coz last thing we wanna see is you having a "fire sale" .
forgot to say that all three of our cars with the 1 wire setup have all been rewired with a haywire or painless wiring kit ...
There weren't any wires on that generator. Well no I this car at least. I had it bolted in, but never wired up. There was a 3 wire alternator hooked up before I swapped engines. But those wires are just taped up now. Not touching any metal.
The best way is to go to a parts house get the cable like Fords use off the solenoid that have a flat lug at each end attach one end to the alternator and one end to the + cable, also get one more cable like that for a ground strap from the alternator bracket to the frame. Those cables are usually 6 gauge and only $4-$5 each.
I also want to convert from 6 to 12. Anyone have some photos of all these good tips/ I am still in the thought process for this and pics would help. Thanks All
