Have you ever been complacent and not double check your clamp before boring our a big hole on a thick chunk of steel on your drill press?

Needless to say, I will always make double sure that my clamps are tight.

I hope these pictures will help to remind someone to be more safe in their shop this Mothers Day weekend.

  12. In all seriousness though....drills/drill presses/power augers...super dangerous. I had a close call with a corded drill once.

Drilling 1/2" plate clamped in a vice. Made a pilot hole with a small bit first then worked my way up with a couple of bits until I got up to a 1/2" hole. The last bit bound up and ripped the drill out of my hands. The bit snapped off in the plate and the drill went flying 6 feet in the air above my head. On the way down the handle hit me in the head. Just pure luck that the razor sharp, sheared bit didn't hook me in the neck or head on the way down.

So many bad things can go wrong using power tools in less than ideal operating conditions.

  16. I was eating a plate of lady fingers....

Do get it checked out, looks serious. A guy I worked with did a number on his finger on an engine lathe a couple of months ago, micro surgery, the works and he has yet to start PT.

Edit, looks like those shots were taken at the ER, you're in the right place. heal fast.

  17. Careful--you don't want to be greeted at the Pearly Gates with, "Dang, we never got one in that way before!," and you don't want to be known for all eternity as "the one who tried to..."

  18. Sorry you got hurt!

I learned this one a long time ago- Dad was making a replacement battery holder for a Lionel Diesel and didn't bother to clamp the sheet metal down... he has a "candy cane" scar from the tin wrapping itself up his pointer finger.

    Lesson learned.

  21. I've seen sheet metal guys trepanning a big hole in panels on the drill press having it spin on them... one had a deep slice on one of his palms, went to the ER, got stitched up and came back to work. Even the thin shit can and will get you.

And good tip for the rest of us. Can't ever drop your gaurd, not for a minute.

    Is FNG short for finger?

  26. I got a similar lesson when I was 12 or 13, I got bound up in a makita 1/2" drill. It bit into the oak railroad tie I was drilling thru, drill spun out of my hand wrapped the cord around the trigger (and finger) and proceeded to beat me with the T handle until my dad grabbed the plug... wrist and arm were tore up for a couple weeks
