Was selling an AD pickup years ago, these 2 guys come up and want to tell me I don't know the market and they only want it to build a rat rod and blah, blah, blah. I wanted $2,300 and would deal a little but their offer of $800 was a fuckin insult. "I don't know the market or the game, huh? Been in this for about 40 yrs fellas, and there's stuff behind that door that might blow your mind. Keep your money." "Can we see what you're working on?" "Sure, let me be polite to you guys after you insult my truck and my knowledge. Hey, it's the least I can do right? Wait here I'll get my garage keys." I went in the house, got a cup of coffee and turned on my 'puter. They actually needed a few minutes to get the message.

Selling another truck many years ago for $4,400. This fuckin jamoke calls and tells me he's going to give me $3,000 and that's all I'll ever get for it. "Really, that's all?" "Yup, that's all their worth. I dunno who told you it's worth that kind of money." "Wow, even with no rust, no bondo? That's it?" "Well I'm sure there's rust and mud, you just can't see it." I was surrounded by 4 Packards, a race car, a Duesenberg and a Cadillac V-16 at the time, but he didn't know that. "Well shit, can you come up a little? I have more than that in it." "Ok, $3,100 but that's it. I'll help you out." "Ok well listen, hold the line, I'll get a pencil and paper so I can give you directions." "Ok, I'll hold." and I put him on hold. I sold it for full price 3 days later. The best you can do sometimes is have fun with it. A quote from my friend Terry, "$2.00? (on a $5.00 item) I'd rather give your ol lady $3.00 to drag you outta here." See what I mean. Another friend gets "How much for this?" holding up his part. "$25.00". He replies, "Or...?" "Ok, $35" and the guy set it down and walked away. That's a win. Remember the movie "Used Cars"? "Why the prestige alone of owning a Buick Centurion convertible can't even be measured in dollars and cents, am I right?" Try that some time using whatever you're selling. The reactions are priceless.

Ive bought a lot of cars, way under asking price, but I always go see it before making an offer, I never run the car down or talk smack.
Paid asking price just as many times too.

I was trying to buy something this week, $100 item, clearly stated it was a 45 minute drive each way for me, and the dude just wouldnt give a straight answer on any details. After 15 or so back and forths, I responded, "Im going to pass, I cant get a straight answer from you". Holy hell, He launched into a tyrade. It was all thru the sites messaging service so I could just block it. People are weird.

  5. Let me change this abit. Say someones asking 5800 for a car , its a 5hr drive one way to go see it. Is it wrong to say would you accept 4500 if I come see the car and like it as thats all I have to spend. Am I being a jerk for doing that ?

I did something similar recently with a car I was selling, the buyer was from a few states away and he told me so, we had been talking back and forth for a week or so and I knew he wasn't full of shit, he said to me "I know you only talk price in person but it's a 12 hour drive for me so where can we go from here" and at that point I was comfortable having him make me an offer and he did come and buy the car.

In that situation, no problem. I might say yes or no to your offer, but I wouldn't get offended, that's a long way to go. If you're a half hour drive away and you're trying to offer me half price, then no. I'm not exactly sure where the line is drawn there but it's somewhere in between those two situations.

  7. i had this same problem trying to buy some nos 60's era floor mats. kept getting one word e-mail replies despite giving my phone number.
"what colors do you have?" answer; "many colors". me; "will you give me a deal if i take them all?" answer"yes" and so on and so on till i gave up.

It's a great time of the year to visit Disney. Load up the kid/grandkids, load the stude on a trailer and drop it off in Florida with me and have spending money for the trip. Win win.

There's never a good time to go to Disney. You pay a fortune to stand in hour long lines for a 2 minute ride and none of it is real. My 8 year old grand daughter went this spring, came home and said, " well, we never have to do that again". Smart kid.

As a businessman,a former New Car Dealership General Manager, and a lifelong car guy,I don't believe in cutting my own throat.Internet offers are generally flaky ones at best.If I want a car or other item,I want to get a phone number and TALK to the seller. Also,I don't negotiate unless it is in person, unless I know and have done business with that person before.Too many clock punchers out there watching too much Not-Reality TV thinking that they are going to bust a move on an unsuspecting idiot. Most buyers fit a matrix,Craigslist tricksters are among the worst, except for Facebook buyers, who generally like to make complete asses of themselves in front of large groups of people.
