My old retainers are two piece. The new ones that I ordered with my valve springs are just one piece. Does that sound right? New one is on the right side.

Probably. Make sure the spring installed height is correct! the new ones won't allow the valve to rotate, which is something that is nice on a truck motor, but not too important on a more race car type motor.

The rotater type are good for low revving truck engines but the lighter ones will rev higher without valve float. Check part number for valve springs and as Jim said check your installed height.
