I like this site because of the basics, normal people, good deals, nice info and all around great site for the no so rich car crowd and the culture that goes with it. NOW you go to the classifieds and there is a ton of 20K plus cars on there, .....Am I just gettn old and prudish??? that's what my son says...
Everything goes up in price!!!!! Quick change rears were 200 bucks and Hemi's were cheap now go buy one!
The best price for anything is as much as the market will bear, and the market is bearing up well under $20K+ cars, even here in Cheapytown.
I can totally relate. I had to sit out of the car world for a little over 8 years. When I got back in I was floored at the prices and availbility of stuff. Sure glad I hung on to my crap all these years. I wouldn't be able to play today if I didn't. As much as I like seeing the nostalgia craze on the street, it has devastaed my wallet! DuckusCrapus
Yeah, you are just getting old. I'm finally able to buy some of the Cars I fell in love with when I was a kid. Dont remember what the prices were back then, but I know it was more than I could spend...
its all relative..........one thing for sure they wont get any cheaper maybe 5 years from now 20k wont buy jack
I don't know!!! I can't get a nibble on my '63 T-Bird for $10K or even a trade. I guess you need to have something somebody wants! Gas $3 buck a gallon, hamburgers $3 bucks each, and like Sonny & Cher said "the beat go'es on".
this is something that has been bothering me for awhile too. i can't figure out if people are buying expensive things or real cheap things. i have talked to alot of sellers and i get the impression they are having a hard time too. maybe the economy, maybe the election year, whatever, i haven't been able to sell much either. i retired four years ago wanting to build stuff and add to my pension, but i haven't done well and i am looking for a job starting next month. i don't think i am asking to much but i get no takers. what i think is, if it's 100 bucks or so it will sell, if it's 20,000 it will sell, but not much in between sells. i am only asking 5k for my t and all the hard work is done.the only thing it need is the drivetrain and wiring fuel lines water hoses, the minor stuff. what do you think?
T roadsters are the hardest things of all to sell, especially the Tbucket roadster pickup configuration. "Hardcore" rodders don't want anyone to know they would really like one and so won't pay anything for them(they'll buy one all right but won 't pay anything). New rodders wonder why you haven't, can't, or won't finish such a neat car and make an assumption something is wrong with it. Old rodders just don't like to buy from guys who haven't been building cars for years 'cause they hate to have to redo everything and won't trust work done by newbies., so IF they buy it will be pennies on the dollar only. Best bet is to put the thing in the front yard with a "For Sale" sign on it and sell it to a guy who doesn't know anything about old cars but always wanted one to mess with. The BEST BET applies to all other old cars too. Second best bet is selling a runner/driver by driving it every day to the bank, post office, grocery store etc. with a "For Sale" sign in the window.
I must be getting old too, remember when a shoebox was 49 to 51 ford a deuce was 32 ford a hardtop was a car with no b pillar need i go on.
I'm 49 ..and you would KILL me if you seen the cars I ran in demo derbies in the mid / late 80's I remember one particular 57 Ford Ranch wagon, meduim blue still in the crate(wood trim) ..It was real nice Paid 75 bucks for it and smashed the shit out of it ! Ha, Ha .. I suppose I killed 75 ..... 57 to 63 Furds back then whoops ! Who knew
Wish I could get fuel that cheap....... Fueled my Dodge Cummins pickemup this morning for $3.45 and saw other stations at $3.55. 87 octane is $3.14 at the cheap places.
i am not sure you know me but i am not new to this stuff. i am 59 years old today and this isn't my first car. as a matter of fact this is my 8th t and a hole lot of other things. like right now i have a '53 henry j street gasser and a race one, '33 willy's coupe and truck to be built, a vw trike, '32 austin bantam altered i race, a flathead dragster almost finished and more glass t's and a bodies and a smattering of vw's, plus a vw that is built to look like a mini '40 ford rpu. a '63 plymouth s/s, '46 ford box truck i built from a coe truck frame and i have been gathering fiberglass roadsters bodies for the last 20 years or so. the reason i tell you this is not to sound like an ass but to show you i ain't new to this. the thing about this t is, all my other ones were finished and driveable. i asure you i don't build junk. all you have to do is look at it up close and you will see.
I look at it this way, back in '64 I was pumping Super Shell at 31.9 and getting paid $1.00 an hr, its all relative. I just got some 87 oct at 2.99 a gal kinda cringed but then again if you do the math ,its about the same. Cars now last longer better gas mlg. etc I'm enjoying myself until the govt will force to ride a bus
ya know, I,m really not trying to compare to the old days, just tired of the skyrocketing price of everything, I know it's part of life but I don't half to like it. Paid 1200.00 for my running, all there '49 Dodge a year ago, thought that was a real sweet deal, and am having a blast with it and I guess really that's all that matters. Not wineing, just venting a little.....
In Canada we pay $1.10 a litre....there's 4 litres in a gallon....that's $4.40 a gallon.....when I started driving, gas was .39 a gal.......
It just makes the hunt all the more fun. For me, even though the prices have escallated, it makes the find that is reasonably priced all the more sweet. Here in Minnesota there are still plenty of vintage parts to be bought reasonably. I paid $50 for a Merc flathead V8 and $25 for a 39 Lincoln front axle complete with spindles, hubs, and all the brakes. The list goes on....... One thing is for sure. Buy what you can afford now and if you have time and enough storage space you can certainly sell it later to help offset your invenstment. Old cars are indeed an investment. Who would have ever thought that 32 Ford barnfinds would sell in the neighborhood of 20 grand for rust.
Except for housing and medical...it is all relative. In 1967 I was pumping Shell regular for 29.9 and I was making $1.40 and hour. I could have bought a typical show ready rod for $2500 or less, but who had that kind of money? I was GIVEN a '34 3W on a boxed frame with an Olds rear end. I had no place to put it so I gave it to a friend. Could have bought Roth's Tweedy Pie for $2200 in '63...Again who had that much dough? We were broke, but had fun. I have great memories...I wouldn't change a thing.
In 1988 i paid 1000 for a 57 chevy 2 door hard top..to buy that same car now would probably be 10K in the same condition.. Time's change, unfortunately it just seem's the cost of living (and playing) has gone up a bit quicker than the pay scale..to me anyway.
Did you see how much BigDaddy got for his Sedan? 17K!!! It's alot harder to find cheap deals anymore, but they are still out there! I think the reason the prices on the HAMB have gone up so much,is becuase the same cars and parts aren't just left overs anymore. Now when you have a manifold, carbs, tranny, rearend, fenders, doors,or whatever, laying around, there's always someone out there looking for what you have! 15,20 years ago,you might just say "nobody's gonna want this". Some guys base a build around a few parts they have, and work from there! Dreadman started out with just a cowl! Which looked just like some of the stuff you see laying in a field somewhere. Maybe you haven't noticed how much the "Shop Cars" are going for now. Call SoCal or Brizio and ask how much for a 32 Ford Roadster! All that shit has gone up too.
I just Deleted a handfull of Political Posts off this Thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274
I was born and raised in Pasadena. I remember when my dad and I were shopping for my first car (around 90?). We saw a 69 Boss 302 Mustang under the highlines behind the original Sellers brothers store with a for sale sign. We called the # and the guy came down to meet us. After looking the car over (Daily driver, original paint, #'s matching, low miles) my dad said thanks but no thanks. When I asked why he said "I'm not paying $4,500 for a G.D. Ford". Pretty much the same story with the 69 Charger 440 car off Glenmore. It was as perfect as a non restored driver could be for $4,500. There were soooo many cool cars around for cheap back then. I don't know how old you are but I remember all the heads drove 1st gen Camaros to high school, alot of them big blocks.
Ahhh...The good old days....Hmmmm....Well at least I don't have to sit on the living room floor any more listening to the ole upright Philco radio for entertainment. Oh look, there's a sign that says gas war...gas .14 for "Red Crown" and .17 for "White Crown". For Sale 1940 Ford coupe. no dents no rust..$35.00 runs good. For Sale...New bungalow house $16,500 but no garage...that was extra A Mikky D .15...fries .10 with a coke .10 Do you want some ice cream? Will that be a .05 cent scoop, or a .10 cent scoop? Or how about even a .05 cent candy bar?? Yep it's all relative It's really just the law of supply and demand. There's just more of us these days, and less of those things from the past. Shoot, it seems like even time has become more valuable. Glad I'm retired now though, and can just contemplate the "Good ole Days".... HellRaiser
milk costs more than gas, what's wrong with that picture?????? [cows are a renewable source, wink, wink] it may be all relative, but holy crap, seems to me things have just gone crazy in the last couple of years, from cars to everyday items. oh yeah, on fuel cost, i 'play' with nitro powered r/c trucks, $25 a gallon for fuel!! a good aftenoon will burn 1/2 gallon!
just to put a positive spin on things , it wont be long and you can get those really cool discounts with your ARP card
