Am I outdated? When is an 'offer' actually an 'offer'?

  1. There was ZERO guarantee the guy was gonna like it after seeing it. I would've went for the sure thing as well. Around here, it's first one with the C.O.D. (cash on the dash baby). Without a cash deposit, he owed the 1st guy NOTHING!

  2. Boy, long thread! My point of view is a deal is not a deal until the money is put in my hand. I will say I never agree to a lower-than-asking price over the phone and always state first come first serve. I just sold a Corvette and had about 20 people emailing or calling. All were very interested, but most had some reason they couldn't come out to see it until days later, so I gave them days and hours when they could come by. A gentleman from Australia called, said he was in Pasadena on a buying trip and could be here in 20 minutes, came out, looked at it and paid what i asked. All the other potential buyers were pissed because I didn't wait until they had a chance to look at it. Ya right, I am going to wait. Idiots! Hell, even if someone gives me a deposit, which i rarely accept, I give them written terms, being how many days the deposit will hold the car and that it is not refundable. Kinda limits looky-loos and those who do not really have the cash and are trying to figure out how to get it.

I wouldn't take it personal. I have gotten used to the flakes, no shows and low ball offers. I call it "Craigslisted".

I actually sold my 56 to a guy on Craigslist for 15.5 k last summer. The guy called me once and showed the next day with the dead presidents in hand.I was stoked to say the least. If you really want sum flakes ,sell a car on Racing junk .Fuuny thing is i saw my 56 on Craigslist a few months ago for 20k ,the same way i sold it.I knew the guy was gunna try and flip it when i sold it to him ,but that was his business.Good luck getting 20 k out of my old 56 in these times .Point is flakes are all over the net and beyond.I dont really mind someone backing out ,as long as they dont leave me hanging...

  7. Give me your take on this..

There was a 50 or so chevy in the clasifieds. My partner calls. A deal is made and phone numbers were exchanged. I get the call 5 min. after the deal was cut and I call the sellers wife to get the money to her. ( I'm in Cali. car was in Tx). Seller states he has a BofA checking account.. I was ready to do a wire transfer. Wife says she doesn't want to give out bank info. ( same info that would be on a check you gave someone, I explained this and she stated she didn't write checks to people) Please keep in mind.. I am still withih 30 min. of the offer being made. The wife bounces me around for several hours. Waiting at the bank.. Went to western union.. so on.. I ended up wire transfering the cash to a friend about 60 miles from her. He said he would go straight there and pay her..
After I advised her that the money was on the road and would be there within an hour. She stopped answering her phone. I had my buddy go back into the clasifieds and p.m. these clowns. The seller said the car was sold and the guy was on his way with a trailer. Turns out.. The car sold for $100 more than the deal he set with us.

I'm thinking, The guy should have NOT accepted our offer and said the first guy with the cash owns it. This dipshit and his wife ran me around for at least 4 hours trying to pay them. Even a simple "we got a better offer" would have saved me a lot of time and bullshit.. They kept me on the hook until the other guy showed up. If he failed to show.. I bet the wire transfer would have worked out just fine for these blowholes.

Nothing is sold until cash is in hand. Now, back to hot rods and customs.
