great score. congrats on the find. and the idea to sell one to fund the other is probably a pretty good call. and like you said, someone else can live the dream too. i love days like that.

Congrats on your purchases. Make sure when you get one done you go back and give that man's wife a ride. I'm sure it would be something that she would never forget.

I think the key to this whole saga is one word that has been used several times RESPECT without that nothing would have happened here respect for the earlier owner respect for his wife respect for the carsnow have respect for yourself and your family and do it right make it an enjoyable family project that is respected and kept within the family forever.

  10. Nice story and nice cars.
I knew a 39 Merc coupe for sale in Holland around 1995-1997 and didn't buy it because i wanted to by a 32 Tudor (the one in my avatar).
I always regreted not buying the Merc because it is probably the only one here in Holland.
Around 2006 the Merc came up for sale again and now it's in my garage and NOT for sale and MINE.
Good luck with your Mercs whatever your plans are.

  11. I would be nice if you show us some pics of your Mercs ;)

  12. Thankyou very much everyone!!

Respect for the owner and his widow was absolutely first and foremost when we picked these up, second was not killing ourselves. Between lifting flatheads, dodging bees, and surviving heat, it was quite a chore, but again completely worth it.

No pics as of yet but the yellow one is coming together quickly. Suspension has been buttoned back up, tires and wheels mounted, and dead rats, bugs, (and even a cat) removed. This will likely be the one that will be up for sale later this summer to fund the other. Not because one is more solid than the other, but because the blue one is mainly the one I had my eye on all these years. The flathead out of that car will be up for grabs as well as soon as I can get it pulled.

I'll definitely start a build thread on the blue one when the time comes, but I don't expect that to be this year as I would like to finish my shoebox, and get my wife her ultimate dream of a 56 chevy before moving on to the merc.

Great story. Subscribed to follow the rest of the tale...

  14. Thanks again guys!

I got mine set to be stored away for a little bit. I just have to finish my shoebox first before I start going to town on this one. I did however pick up a few smaller parts for it at a local swap meet yesterday.

The other that we planned on selling however is ready to go. The idea with this one is to get someone else who's as passionate about these cars as we are into the most solid foundation for a custom/restore/hot rod project as they could get there hands on. So a fair amount of work has been done to make that happen. It's for sale on the hamb now, and soon to be on the auction site.

From here I'm on the fence with mine as to plan on chopping the top, or going carson like the Sam Barris 40 merc. Just about everything that guy touched I find to be perfection and he nailed it with his, plus driving a chopped car daily there are times I get a little cramped. So opinions on that decision are welcome. I can't wait to get to work on that one!

Hey Sparky, I still go by Craigs house and cant believe they are out of the yard. I wish I had the money now but will have to wait for the right time to get my 40 merc. Hope the new owner does a sweet chop like Sled has on his. Jason

  17. Ya I was in town this weekend and drove by there on my way out. Still boggles my mind as well. I really wish I could have gotten to know him better as he seemed like a cool dude, but I was just the pesky kid that wouldn't stop asking about his cars.

Thats funny right there!!!!!!! I was the same way or still am cause I would go to my next door neighbors garage when I was like 10 and he had a motorcycle that broke records at bonneville. I must have really bothered him and he told me to go to the store and get a can of compresion.HaHaHa!!!! I got to talk to Craig about 4 times and he loved all kinds of cars. He went and served for our country in Korea and when he got back him and his brother bought those mercs. The last time I talked with him he was out shoveling snow off of some of his cars and I asked if he needed any help and he said he was done and was going in the house to warm up. Hope the person who buys it does a great job with it. Jason

  20. That pretty much says it all right there. This is exactly the scenario we were after. Lord knows I couldn't give what I wanted to both of these cars, and CADDY1 you're without a doubt a guy that appreciates that car for it is, what it can be, and WHO it came from. I'm glad you and my ol' man worked out a deal on it, and he's happy to have gotten to know you as well. I know I don't even have to say it, but ENJOY!

This is just a great story. I vote chop it, like Sledge's car, very Matranga-ish (new term?). You're likely only gonna get one go at at this. Do it to your vision, no compromises, even if it tales a lil longer.
