Anyone know an oem application to yield a 258 6 cyl setup with a 5 speed trans? The 258's are a pretty bullit proof engine. I know that some Jeeps use this engine with a 5 speed but the trans is mated to a transfer case. Thanks, guy
Yep, AX-15 all the way. They did make 2wd versions, but you are probably in for a good search. Should bolt right up. Do not settle for an earlier Peugeot BA10/5, as you will blow it up.
I don't know the number of the 5 speed qwith the transfer case but if you have one you can no doubt get a tail shaft and housing for it. No one really used or uses a dedicate 4WD transmission they use a transmission with the transfer case bolted on.
The AX15 is a good choice. Fortunately it was also used in Dakota and some full size Dodge trucks in 2WD applications as well as 2WD Cherokees. The bellhousing bolts onto the main case, so you can use the Dodge version by simply changing to the Jeep bellhousing and that can come from either 2WD or 4WD....as the main case is the same in all versions. One word of caution though. To someone unfamiliar with these trannies, the smaller AX5 looks just like an AX15 unless they are side by side and then you readily can see the size difference. AX15's were always behind a 6 cylinder in Jeeps and V6 and small V8 in Dodges. AX5's were only used on 4 cylinder models in both Jeep and Dodge and share the same bell in those applications. Also, Novak Adaptors make a slick adapter kit for the AX15 that replaces the Jeep/Dodge bellhousing with a very nicely machined plate that allows the trans to bolt to any standard GM style bolt pattern (Chev/Pontiac/Buick etc.). 258 and 4.0 liter to Chev adapters are fairly common in the off-road groups. I have switched the bells from Jeep to Dodge and also have the adapter mentioned above. Ray
You should be able to put a T5 behind one pretty easy too. Seeing as they also came with them. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t4_t5.htm
