  4. Steel belts.

You can't see them in these photos, but there were plenty of sparks coming off this tire...

Then it went BAM! and we thought he'd fucked his rear end, but it was only the steel belts snapping and the outer casing coming off, so he went back at it...

Until it went ppphhhhtttthht whap whap whap (that's the technical term :D )

    Steel belts make sparks.

yeah, me too. it took me a while to remember, but i have an old video tape i did in high school for a class project, it was nothing more than me and a few classmates runnin to various back country roads and doing burnouts and donuts, there were sparks coming from my tires from rocks.

this is what i have been meaning. for the first race in town milner does not expect it so hes running stock exhaust. but before the big race he takes his header plugs out at the gas station. if you watch the big race his exhaust is coming out of the rear tips. maybe some would, but not that much. i was never talking about the race in town. i was talking about the film clip. wait its just a movie? now im gonna have to sell my milner clone car. my lifes ruined.

I've noticed all that exhaust too.

    Its definitely a blooper.

You'd expect the exhaust condensation to be coming from the header....and its not.

A friend of mine in High school had a turbo T-bird that had a couple nails in the tire. He did some really good burnouts with that car and the tires would spark just like that. Only happened with tire spin, going down the road it didnt' do shit.

I like the studded snow tire theory. Especially since it's in central CA in late Summer. Maybe he had em on to get traction because the roads were melting because it was so hot!! thats gotta be it.

OK, I will try some guesswork. The same Chevy was built for Two Lane Blacktop, and it had some trick rear brake set up to help the stuntmen wreck the car in that movie, then, they shot a differant ending on James Taylor having a Nervous Breakdown!!! I always noticed the sparks, so I am figuring it may have been the rear calipers the Chev had rubbing during hard launches. There is a site dedicated to Two Lane Blacktop that describes the Chev and GTO if anyone is interested. Just Google it!

  17. hahaha......best song, and they forgot it!

  18. metal give sparks when ground in the dark.. not rocks

so its metal a nail or steel belt or steel nut - bolt in the tread

My buddies '70 Mach 1 would throw sparks off of the rear tires but they were tiny orange sparks right under the tire that you could barely see. I'm guessing it was from the steel belts on his totally worn tires. I don't thnk they would show up very well on film so I like the nail theory the best.

In American Graffiti 2 one of Milner's competitiors makes a joke about how Milner should put his Chevy motor (from the rail) back into his coupe. I always figured that meant he was running a small black Chevy in the Duece Coupe. What sort of killer motor would the 55 Chevy have had back in '62 to blow off a coupe weighing a few hundred less?

No, it's not. The bumpers and wheels are spray on chrome (silver), but it's a 2-door.

  23. I think it is all special effects - just like in "Meet The Parents" where the two cars are racing between stop lights and they lock up the brakes coming to a screeching halt - ain't gonna happen with anit-lock brakes. Or when you hear squeeling tires on gravel. Watch a couple old movies. Every car starting sounds like it has a flathead or Y-Block starter. Just my .02 Tom - restorit

  24. If you play it backwards, the sparks spell out, "Louie Louie by the Kingsmen didn't come out until 1963"

actually the 56 at the end IS a four door. just watched a thing a couple of weeks ago on it, had interviews with lucas and all. the 56 was a four door hardtop and they put a strip of wood in there for the colum. if you watch the wreck closely it gets thrown aorund and moves. plus most of those cars were real piles that they fixed up real piles. lots of bondo. i would kill for that intake on the 32. isnt that motor a 265 too?
