I was stationed in Vallejo when they made the movie. I saw the car in the field on my way to Sears Point before they hauled it away. And I myself came to Vallejo from Idaho and had to sell my studded tires because the cops spotted the studs shortly after I got there. And it isn't very far from Vallejo/Petaluma area east to Sacramento and up the pass to Reno. At least not far for those who don't spend their entire life without leaving town :p

Of course today you can drive from Vallejo to the foot of the pass east of Sacramento without ever actually leaving town. All those empty rolling brown hills are sub-divisions now.

It's probably some effects they threw in to make the race look more exciting. If you saw Mythbusters when they attempted to re-enact the scene where the rear-end was pulled out of the cop car with a cable, they proved that the scene was totally faked in the movie.

I have noticed it also and just figured it was played into the movie for the wreck at the end when the tire finally blows.....................

I'm going to venture a guess that maybe some part of
the traction bar setup might be touching the road
    under heavy torque loads?

This was covered in an earlier Graffiti thread. The movie cop car had a traditional leaf spring rear end. The Mythbuster car was a late model Crown Vic with coil springs & ladder bar rear end. You can not make a valid comparison of the two types!

The roll over car was a 2 dr sedan. The Burn car was a clapped out 2dr HT, they did use a piece of wood to mimick a sedan. The door of the burn car is still closed in the movie I believe.

There is a larger, older Graffiti thread.

  10. It's probably the only car movie with a truly great cast and great storyline.

I can beleive no one has said it. The sparks under the 55 on take off was Falfa's smoke he flicked out the window to free up his hands for the race........."Ya but he's stupid"

maybe there was a screw in the tire, in a nut stuck in the treads or something

I can't believe your an idiot and saying this. There have been several people saying it was a cigarette thrown out the window. Learn to read.

It's gravel. Seen it lots of times at the unoffical drags. As a kid, used to take a handful of gravel at night and throw it real hard on the road. Was easy to get sparks.
