I lived in SF so this SF map is very interesting. In one of the DVD commentaries, Lucas talks about how he was documenting the end of an era. Specifically the end of the early sixties, then soon came 'nam, psychedelics, etc. Well, if I recall correctly, just off the upper left side of that map is Market street. That is where the the Fillmore Auditorium was located. So just two blocks away from that drive in was where the world of Graffitti ended.

  3. It is interesting you say it was filmed in June-August because i have seen many interviews with the characters and tey all say how cold it was outside, their breath fogging, etc. Are you sure it was filmed in the summer?

Didn,t GL have a crash in the sixties maybe that plate is from that car. Maybe that is the answer to the mystery of THX 1138 aka THX 138. If so it answers a fundamental sub culture question that has wandered the ether for nearly 40 years, I,m excited..................

We drove right through Petaluma on the way up to Tardel's place in Santa Rosa... :(

If I had've known I would've stopped to check it out, as unrecognisable as it probably is now.

    Cool pics. Thanks for sharing.

...yes, that grille is too low and looks goofy. That's probably why the clones have the grille higher.

I cant personally verify,as I've never been there, but multiple sources on the internet list 140 s. van ness ave as being where the "Mels Burger City" portions of the movie were filmed...and as you say it was torn down after filming,I also read that the day the movie was released in '73 Mels was gone and there was a Burger King standing in its place

    Great photos, thanks for sharing!
Does anyone have photos of the Mel's building on the left and back side of the circular drive-up area??? In still photos and in the movie, we only see shots of the front and right side (The extended area with the phone booth). In the survey sketch posted here, it looks as though the circular area continues around to the back when viewed from the front (money) side.

  21. Thank you for the pictures...Just what I needed something else to add to my American Graffiti shrine. For me, it's a spiritual experience watching the movie. Oh yea, it is Sunday after all.

Little Opie had a pretty good influence on us rebel types, not only on Andy Griffith, but A.G. too.

    Opie: "Poor Horatio"
