This is the first shot I've seen that indicates there's a 2nd story (windows for the restaraunt office?) behind what I always figured was just a false 2nd story facade to display the Mel's sign. Very interesting.

  2. Very cool stuff. With all the interest in this movie its a wonder no one has published a definitive fact and photo book of the movie and its memorabilia.

Don't worry. Knowing Lucas he will get ILM to chop the coupe and release a Special edition version of AG with all the things he wanted in the movie, but couldn't get done in time, or technology didn't permit.

  4. I too wonder why there is no coffee table book about the movie. There is no doubt it would be a hell of a money maker for the publisher. If anyone ever does it I hope they do it right. I think it should include the script, a chapter on George Lucas and his thoughts etc, all about the actors, all about the making of the film and location maps etc, info on all of the main cars (where they came from, where they are now and accurate details) and a section about the collectables.Of course the book should be filled with awesome pictures. If they had made this book 20 years ago I think it would still be a steady seller today. Someone is really missing the boat. I guess the rights belong Universal Studios. Surely they could put someone on the job or someone who stands to benefit could surely propose some kind of deal that would be beneficial to both parties.
I am talking about a classy, big book that would probably cost at least $50. Now watch someone come out with a crappy, innacurate, $19.95 POS that just leave you wondering why they couldn't do it right.

Very cool thread. I have to rewatch it about every 6 months just to get the AG fix. I graduated in 61 so it brought back memorys. My oldest brother had a 58 Chevy but it was a 2 door post with 3 twos.

I was just about to dig that thread up mikes51. I am still all but convinced that is the car that inspired the Grafitti coupe.

I dig all the behind the scenes pics. A bit different than the usual AG threads.

That's a great thread. Fewer of these cool restaurants survive to this day. I hope more can be preserved in the future...

I'm just curious why there haven't been more accurate hot rod films made?
I'm not talking about some cheesey B movie but a real accurate hot rod movie.

I graduated in 1962 and American Graffitti has always held a special place. Although I did not graduate in California there is just so much about the movie thats generic to the era that anyone from that time can make a connection.
For me it was timed right to get the juices flowing for a hot rod again as marriage and kids had deprived me of one in the driveway for too long.

There is also another car in the movie I would love to see a pic of it is only
shown on the cruise shots it appears to be maybe a white 40 ford but in
the movie you just see drive by I always pause and try to see it does any
body else know what car I am talking about.

Ha Ha, reminds me of when Curt is riding in the Merc and he says, "Yea, the wimps get all the chicks" or something to that effect. Then all the Pharoahs give him that dirty look.

The saying is "There are two seasons in the bay area, Winter and the 4th of July" (I think it was Mark Twain that said it)

All the cruising scenes were originally scheduled for filming in San Rafael. But, after the first night's filming San Rafael revoked their permit and the crew was not allowed to continue shooting beyond a second day. Location Manager, Nancy Giebink contacted another nearby small town, Petaluma and they were graciously allowed to shoot the remainder of the film there. Lucas managed to persuade the San Rafael city council to come back on Monday, July 3rd and Sunday, July 23 to film some scenes including a montage of cars cruising.

  26. You're right!!!! I just saw and talked to her at the Endless Summer Cruise in Ocean City MD in October. I told her she was hot too, and quoted a few of her lines and she just laughed. I asked her to say a few. It was a real cool conversation. She said to come out to the reunion, they have it every year like a family thing. Just plain cool.

To ask where that plate is from is a good question.

The gold on black Cal. plate was issued in 1963 (The movie is about Lucas' summer of 62). California plates issued in 63, including commercial plates had six digits. Non-commercial plates had 3 letters followed by 3 numbers. The commercial (63) plates on my 56 F-100 have a single letter followed by 5 numerals.

The plates issued prior to the 63 gold on black were the reverse black on gold.

I'm not an expert on California license plates but I don't know of any gold on black California plates ever issued with 7 digits. I think the first 7 digit California plates issued were gold on blue about 1969.

7 digit plates (gold on blue) had a single numeral followed by three letters followed by three numerals.

I don't know of any California plate ever issued (in any color) with 3 letters followed by 4 numerals...That's not to say there never has been, but I don't know of any.

Maybe that's why it's on display.

A worthless side note. All pickups in California (including El Caminos and Rancheros) have commercial plates. If you don't have commercial plates on your pickup in California you can't haul anything other than a suitcase in the bed.
