How is it any different than Ryan's post about the Widow and the '36 5 window today? If he would have scored it for cheap from the widow, everyone would be high-fiving him.
    Im just saying...

But to answer my own question, I guess it would be a little different since most of us would keep something like that and treasure it.. not just flip it for money..

I would have loved to find that Harley Davidson Bicycle sprocket, and all those vintage signs.

Those old timers on the show were pretty neat, especially the WWII vet.

oh..and those guys did come off kind of "deushy" and annoying. It did seem like they were dressing down a bit to fit in more.

Yes, I enjoyed the show. There was an article in a weekly antique paper I suscribe to that said they currently have 8 episodes of 10 scheduled in the can & will watch the ratings to see how it does. FWIW the article also said the pickers were dealing with there own $. What could be better than earning a living at what you like to do? I do a little junk dealing also & I can tell you that for every "home run" you make there's also a turd that won't sell.

  4. I like the part where the geezer answers the door and only engages the two dudes, apparently not noticing the gaggle of video production folks standing in his front yard.

Seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot on this. they do have cable in IOWA don't they? plus, it's kinda like the whole "BARRETT-JACKSON SYNDROME" now everything some old boy has got is gonna be worth xxx dollars 'cause thats what it sold for on TV.

I'll watch "American Pickers" before I'll watch the "Detroit Bros." turn a suburban into a corn roaster!

I will bet they are busy ,I emailed em, they emailed back.I sent pics no response yet.We shall see what happens.Everything they would get would overwhelm their ability to haul away. The dude has 20 years experience is this and Im 47 and started when I was 9 or 10 buying and swapping Schwinn bicycles and parts. So I've got 37 years.I hope the show runs awhile,It seems rehearsed and staged to me though. For my mountain of treasures and they can make lots more off of it.A good investment for the right person.Cars,Trucks,Motorcycles,Parts parts and more parts,Signs ,gas pumps, even a complete antique gas station from the 1920s.

  8. How much to ship the gas station to NH ? :D

I watched the same episode twice. As they see the old mans house and the passanger says "hey turn around and check this guy out" you can see the front knobby tire of the motorcycle already in the van! Still beats just about everything else on TV.

Now every thing will be a collector item," I saw those on TV going for big dollars" will be the answer. To bad flippers ruin the prices when you are looking to build and use something.I guess it always turns into a all about money thing.

Honestly, I dont think the show is going to catch on much, and I dont think it will over-inflate prices. Sure maybe some yuppie going through his grandparents yard might think he can get a lot for an old sign. The reality is you and me, and hundreds of thousands of others, will not pay big bucks even if a show promotes some wild estimation of what they "could" make. Maybe I misunderstood that "profit" part of the show, but it seems their profits are all based on what they think they should make, rather than what they actually sell the piece for. Interesting show for mindless entertainment, i'll take it at face value.

I learned many years ago that profit was NOT a dirty word. I think the profit on this show is make belive. The numbers they showed on the screen were projected and not true profit but what they thought they could get. How long will they have their money tied up until they sell it? How much did it cost to travel around to find their inventory? It's a busness but there most likely making money from the TV series than on the "Junk" they sell.

I wonder how long it will take for someone to get some "birdshot" in their @ss for ignoring the "no trespassing" sign and digging around on some old hermit's land or cold-knocking on the door, then try and sue the producers of the show...

  14. I am pretty sure that all the deals are made off camera. and suspect the show salts the barns/sheds/etc. All reality shows are scripted, rehearsed, and edited.

This show pisses me off. I just don't like seeing people get taken advantage of. If it is a person buying something that they can use or keep i guess i dont have a probelm with it, but its the "flippers" just in it for the money that pisses me off. Also, hang on to your wallet cuz here goes the price of anything resembling vintage or antique. I hope they pull it off the air for poor ratings.

Ryan gave her the opportunity to list it in the paper. He told her she could get more for it cuz he's a nice guy. I'm finding out that more often than not the nice guy finishes last.

there's a good chance no one would have given anything for the stuff, I know a lot of it it worth a lot more, but who else is going to dig for it and pay at least something, The old lady where he found the memory jar, she didn't even know what it was , he offered her 50 bucks for it, a rip off dealer might have given her five dollars. She didn't care about making money on all the stuff, she was probably just glad to have a little cash in her pocket instead of a barn full of junk. there's a good chance when she dies her relatives will just haul out a dumpster and have it all trucked to the landfill.

X2...I like the way they describe the stuff as dusty, rusty, old junk and knowing damn well they will instantly flip it for cash....but there are an awful lot of goofs on here that do this as well....I just happen to be like the goofs on the show Hoarders (well not that bad), that collect stuff and really do not want to get rid of anything, even though I know I can flip some stuff for a profit.

But everyone looks at it as different....talking with my dad he thinks that the stuff is just sitting there, the people make a profit and if they do not sell it while they are alive it will most likely be auctioned off anyway.

But I still stand by my original thinking of that they are ripping these folks off....and making it very clear they are doing that by posting actual values.

  28. Now I agree that it's not nice to take advantage of old people. But, before the tv show came along, this is how these guys were making a living. And, you gotta make a profit to make a living at anything. I know it's probably all staged, but I haven't seen them get rich off any of that old stuff so far, just alittle profit here and there. If they didn't make any profits, they may as well get a shitty job like most of the world has. But, now with the tv show, I'm sure the selling of old stuff is just pocket change. Look what tv did for those chopper guys in Orange county NY!

I have no problem with the show. If the seller sets the price, they pretty much pay what's been asked or pass. The only time I really saw them price something low was when the seller wouldn't say anything. All of us do the same thing. Now it's just on TV.
