The wooden one was horribly ugly, but I'd put it back.......

take the lid off the ammo box, turn it over and cut the slot in the bottom, then its just a metal box.

There would be room for the indicator beside the shifter, and shorten it up a bit.

(or throw the thing away and paint the wood black and reinstall)

There may be options in the wood. I have some old aluminum trim pieces removed from an old Alfa Romeo which may help out the wooden box a bit. A proper painting to the box, some nice stainless ribs on the side and I may have something else.

I'm gonna try it anyway (as always) and see what happens.

  5. The whole idea of making something new for your car is to IMPROVE it's looks or function. This does neither. At least cut the slot with a cut off wheel and paint it. Or better yet just get a chrome ring and a boot.

    Right I totally agree...

But what you quoted me on was me noticing that instead of saying it like you did, which was nice, constructive criticism, desoto stuck his head in and basically said "its ugly you aren't as cool as me."

I just got done doing a similar thing. I needed something for an o/t jeep for storage. I ended up making up an ammo box/console/cupholder. I'll post pics later so y'all can rag on it........:)

Work the old wood box with 80 grit on a sanding disc til the finish is gone, then brush it with fibergl*** resin. Repeat sanding with 120, repeat resin, then 220, then more resin, then 320, and more resin. Bondo if it's not completely smooth yet. Paint or pinstripe or upholster as required.

An engine turned shift plate would then dress er up real nice.

Personally, the ammo box is just discarding yesterday's questionable trend for today's questionable trend. It buys ya 3 years, tops.

Man that is way cool.I was thinking about putting 2 ammo boxes on the hood of my 57 as hood scoops and when it rained I'd just close them. This could be some new fad.

Here it is. I used three inch exhaust tubing and an old ammo box, i had to countour the bottom to clear the floorpan. Now it can hold booze and ammo! I will be adding a lock to it soon. It was the only thing that fit between the aftermarket seats.

Sure it's ugly. Sure it don't look right, but you never know until you try. How many times have you seen something on a car at a show that was unusual but it just "worked". Trial and error. Keep on truckin.
