Low mile original motor, only driven 500 miles a year. Oil changes every 2000 miles. Should be a great low miles motor to build!
Pull the intake and find this! Sounds about normal to me.

 

I bought a nine year old Dodge pu with a 360 in it and it looked even worse than this when I pulled the intake off. You could actually see an imprint of the bottom of the intake in the crud under it.

 

A magnum engine, right? I had one in a Durango that would drop oil pressure to zero, we would turn it off but when we restarted it, there was oil pressure again. We had to quit driving it.

It had been a leased vehicle and disassembly found the engine was full of sludge. The best anyone could figure the sludge would get sucked up in the oil pickup to where it was blocked and no oil could flow. Then, shutting the engine down released suction so the sludge fell off, and when you restarted there was oil pressure again.

I spent about a week of late nights scraping off thick sludge in the top and bottom ends of that thing, and installed a new oil pump. Once I was done it was good to go again for as long as we owned it.

 

Actually mine was a 77 LA with around 70,000 around town miles.

 

Way back when I was a few years out of high school, my Aunt told me her 10 year old Oldsmobile 350 was making noise and wanted me to check it out.
The motor had oil pressure, but something didn't sound right under the one valve cover. When I pulled it off, you couldn't even see the rocker arms! There was so much sledge built up there were impressions in the build up on the bottom of the covers. After a clean up, I found 2 of the 4 rocker pedestals on one bank badly worn. there was a bunch of sledge build up on the other side as well, but the rocker pedestals on that bank were all OK.

I replaced the worn pedestals and cleaned up everything as best as I could before replacing the covers with new gaskets. My boss at the gas station suggested that I change the oil & filter, and put 4 quarts of ATF into the motor, run it about a 1/2 hour, then drain it while it was hot, change the filter again and install oil. The car ran so much better!
My aunt told me that she had the oil changed every 4,000 miles, but the car only had about 25K miles on it (about once every other year!) She seldom drove it out of town, mostly just to the local store then back home. I told her she really needed to change the oil every year. she tole me she would.
About 3 years later, she called me again, "That noise is back again." I, pulled the valve covers again, the sludge build up wasn't as bad as it was the first time, but it was very noticeable. The last oil change was the one I gave it 3 years before. I replaced 2 more rocker pedestals, replaced the gaskets and covers, did the AFT thing again, and changed the oil & filter, and returned the car back to her.
The next time the noise came back, she replaced the car.

 

Just needs a good buff…
