Come on now, you have to give him credit for putting jamb nuts on the hitch so it won't slide back and forth.

  4. Makes sense.... those all-thread cross-bars allow adjustment to ensure accurate tracking of the towed trailer!

I was with may dad at a shop he ran between Canyon & Happy Texas. A pickup towing an old sedan pulled into the gas station next door. The sedan was pulled by a chain through about an 8' length of 2" pipe. When they pulled back onto the highway Dad said. " They must have one that ran and one that had brakes."

Hey , hey now, I used to install these type bolts and nuts back in the day when I was an assembler/ installer at the Renton Boeing plant.

On the ranch we wound up towing a lot of things back home. My dad used that to keep the little kid steering the broken thing and not big enough to reach the brake from running into the back of the thing doing the pulling.

For many years a chain through a piece of pipe was a legal tow bar in IL, as long as both vehicles had up to date license plates on them. I don't think that is true anymore.

I looked into the law about towing a car behind another in my province.
The motor vehicle act is silent, except to say that no one can be in a towed vehicle(!)
There's going to be a lot of bumper damage.

  13. We had a towbar just like that for "towing the line".

So it was YOU! I think I found some of these in B727's I repaired.

My Dad just used to let us sit inside the car.

My dad used to borrow a setup that had a ball hitch that clamped to a front bumper and a pipe with couplers on both ends. No chain. Worked okay for short trips.

I think the original comment by my dad was based on what he saw as a more permanent connection and may have something to do with the Oklahoma plates on the vehicles. There was/is a lot of regional "humor" in that area. Everyone is the butt of someone else's jokes. He also used to say that if it wasn't for bailling wire Texas would float off into the Gulf of Mexico.

Same thing here. It's a commonly held view that it is illegal, but there is nothing I can find in the regulations that say I cannot tow with a cable/chain.

The car gets driven to the drags under it's own power. How else does one get home from the drags after grenading the vehicle :D?

    Cheers,

There is nothing wrong with the Kiwi Number 8 Solution, nor are there many things that cannot be repaired with Number 8 fencing wire.

    Cheers,

I towed my brother home once using a few strands of barbed wire. Even went back later and fixed the guy's fence. He would have known who did it and cutting fences in Texas is a big deal.
