  2. He was a "real" person. Seems like a down to earth, matter of fact guy.

  5. Damn Ryan I thought you ment you interviewed Von Dutch and I was just getting ready to go buy me one of them smart phones.

Pretty good little vid. Not what I remember him as but I was real little and memory is selective. I don't think he was a bad sort just different, I guess I can't come down on someone for being different much.

    Thanks I enjoyed that.

The man was a master, in spite of his eccentricities......................or was it because of them?

Good to see him in what appears to be realatively good spirits and good health.

  9. Always have seen the name Von Dutch and associated it with artistry. Never really knew anything about the man behind the name. Cool to see he was just a regular guy....even though a tad on the weird side. But we're all a little weird if we're into this stuff....

For everything I have read about him, he seems pretty humble there compared to some of the "craftsmen" of today. Nowadays you see the OCC guys and such on TV trying to lay claim they invented anything and everything. Im sure most people here would kill for some of his work, and it was nothing to him. Cool clip

First time I've ever heard him speaking. Thanks for sharing. Interesting fortuitous ending too.

    Cool interview.
He seemed to enjoy talking about his work and creating? Just one of the guys bench-racing or comparing ideas.

Maybe the eccentricity showed up when customers or an audience wanted to draw on his energy for the "Von Dutch" side?
It'd be interesting to wipe away the hype and see what he was really all about?

    An addendum:
I know a guy that deals with Schizophrenia. When he's on his meds and all is good, all is good. When alcohol or a mood swing hits, you'd swear you were meeting a "Von Dutch?" He goes into his "Tasmania stage" and erupts.
This guy has no tangible "hands-on" talent, but has a memory unlike any computer and both his kids were magna and summa cum laude grads.
Some freak strain of intellect there?

Quite a privelidge to witness revelations straight from the mouth of an icon.
It gave me chills and made me laugh.

Bunch of the Kustom Kings were there that year. Von Dutch was sitting at a table and we said hello. He wanted to know if we had any beer and the best we had was a warm six pack from Al's trunk. Those of you that were there remember how hot it was at the fairgrounds. We gave it to him and he signed an autograph to the "krazy painters in New Hampshire, Von Dutch 83?". I proudly have the memory of meeting in person a true renissance man that I read about in my youth. And I have the framed autograph with a photograph of Dutch signing it, with the late Al Berry and Bob and Juanita Moscoffian (Worcester Summer Nationals promoter) looking on. After we got the autograph, we were urged to move along by a "handler" and not to bother him. Glad you posted this Ryan, he is truly a legend.

How do you play the sumbish? I clicked everywhere & all I got was an ITunes ad.....

  24. Von Dutch - there is only one. What a guy. Roth had said something to the affect of: "Dutch just stripes - while the rest of us have to lay out all our stuff, gridlines, stabilo pencil out lines and all that, Dutch just stripes it and its always right on the money. I always wondered How the hell he does that"

Ryan I'm reading Von Dutch The Art, The Myth, The Legend right now. The book is sad and disturbing but your interview made me feel he was more misunderstood than sick. I talked to a local painter(art) and he was telling me lots of truly gifted painters have some of the same traits. He was using Walter Anderson as a similar soul. The single mindedness of having to finish a painting or striping must have been harder on these types than we know. I wish some one would do a book just on his metal work-guns, knives, car parts, any of it. I love his crazy ideas.

  27. Weird thing with the car accident perfectly timed... I thought it was edited into the film!

  28. A buddy of mine drove his Olds Convt, from Dallas just to Have him do some striping...This was in 1959 so he was well known even then.

Watching that was really comforting, almost like seeing my late grandfather on film talking about the things he did.
