    ICE CREAM SUMMER:
Long ago rural folks would use a block of ice and chip off what they needed with an ice pick to make homemade ice cream. Making ice cream from scratch required lots of churning of the dasher filled ice, fresh cream, sugar, and the local fruit in season. People most often made ice cream in late June and the month of July because that was the fruit picking season when the fruit would be sweet—peaches raspberries, cherries, or strawberries. For many ice cream is closely associated with this time of the year when local fruit become ripe. Older relatives would tell me growing up that there is nothing better than homemade ice cream no matter who makes it.

Every year at Cruise Central during the Crusin’ the Coast (Biloxi Ms) week there is is an ice cream vendor. His set up includes several of these old time ice cream freezers mounted on a trailer. The freezers are all hooked together via shafts, gears and powered by an old Hit or Miss Engines. Even though I’ve seen it numerous times I always go over to take a look. All the ice cream sold is made from this set up. As a kid I remember making ice cream at my grandparents farm using one of the hand cranked freezer/churns. A lot of work with people taking turns on the crank.

June 1975. This was my ride for graduation day. No pom-poms or shoe polish, as is like straight from the bottle. Looking back it's like it was more hip than I thought. 38_Dodge1 001.jpg
38 Dodge oil drilling field truck with a 9' box. We left it, and powered it by way of a 65 Caddie eng, trans, steering, axle and power brakes. I learned a lot on this truck.

My dad was an ice cream churning pro. I think I remember him using rock salt in the ice to make it colder? Peach was his favorite because we had a peach tree in the yard.

  20. I remember churning homemade ice cream many times, especially at the grand parents’ farm.
Back then (50’s) we would take a #2 wash tub, put it in the trunk, and go to the ice house at Mr. Long’s community store, where a 50 pound block was bought.
Once back, the ice would be chipped into pieces with an ice pick. The women folk would be in the kitchen mixing up the flavor of the day. Once the bucket was filled with the creamy, fruit laden soup, we would layer the ice with rock salt and start the churning. The parents had figured out that they could con us into the early churning with the promise of licking the dasher paddles.
As the mixture hardened, we would sit on the churn to anchor it down and the adults cranked it. Once it got too hard to turn, we removed the crank mechanism and dasher and packed it with ice and salt, layered some burlap bags on top and let it set up hard.
When it was pronounced “ready” the salty ice was removed, any water drained out the hole in the side of the wooden churn, the bucket lid removed and heaven was just a spoon away!
I still have my churn. Just wish I had the energy to crank it!

You can freeze ice cream with a stock Model A or any low powered vehicle. Jack the left rear axel till the center of the axle is level with the center of the ice cream freezer shaft. Loosely tie the ice cream freezer handle to a wheel spoke with a shoelace. Start the engine, put transmission in low, and let out the clutch. When the engine slows down the ice cream is done. Don't forget to have a youngster sitting on the freezer to keep it from tipping over.

I have to add my 1957 F-100. This was taken after i Purchased it, and did a ride out to the outskirts of Vancouver. Shortly after this, the ol' 272 would not fire up.
Turns out it was 3 stuck valves!!
However- my pal Sam gifted me a 312 that is currently being wrapped up and I will be prowling the streets soon!! upload_2024-7-10_15-29-14.jpeg
