I’ve been conscripted for auxiliary grand kids baby sitting at Disneyland for a week starting on the 17th. Well all be flying down and therefore no car and I don’t feel like being ripped off on a rental for a handful of hours. So I’m wondering if there are any HAMB friendly events that take place around Disneyland either walking or bus distance. A number of years ago I did find a car show and on the bus I got. It took a VERY long time to get to the show and then back again. So any venues/ideas for a guy who doesn’t mind the destination but who looking for a Hot Rod fix?
Well, since you got no other info, the Peterson. Unfortunately, Maps shows a 4 hour bus ride. I'm sure you could find a taxi/uber/gypsy ride, but can't help with logistics of that. I'd also use your location to pinpoint rod shops and manufacturers nearby.
Every Friday evening there is a car show on Main st in Garden Grove. Not particularly HAMB friendly but sometimes there were on topic cars and other interesting things to look at. It’s about 2 miles from Disneyland. You could take a bus on harbor going southbound to Garden Grove Blvd, then go westbound on Garden Grove Blvd and get off around Euclid st and it’s not far from there. Edit: also there is donut derelicts every Saturday in Huntington Beach (7-10 miles ish away?) on magnolia and Adams st. https://www.donutderelicts.com/
DONUT DERELICS EVERY SAT MORNING(MAGNOLIA & ADAMS HUNTINGTON BEACH). GARDEN GROVE CAR SHOW EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT. I'LL KEEP MY EYES OPEN IF THERE'S ANYTHING ELSE COMING UP.
The Model T meet is good but mostly original cars. I noticed something is going in Buena Park which should be close (taxi ?) but I have no idea what it is like. Charlie Stephens
Take an Uber to the Lions Museum, you will not be disappointed. The Petersen Museum is super impressive, but not as hot rod/drag race oriented.
SoCalCarCulture is very good for daily gathering. Been following it for years…Donut Derelicts every Saturday morning arriving at 5:15AM.
Great Idea on the Peterson but I’ll be damned if I going to ride longer on bus to get to it when it will take just over to fly from Vancouver to Santa Ana! LOL. I may investigate rod/speed shops though...
Thanks for the replies guys. The last time we drove down we did do theetersen. My wife and I both enjoyed it a lot!
Hello, What a dilemma. But, your situation reminds me of this classic song: “WALKING IN L.A.” by The Missing Persons… Having lived in So Cal all of my life, that portion of So Cal is not the best place to walk around. My wife grew up in nearby Buena Park and worked in Anaheim for a couple of years as a teen. The whole area is one of the hottest places in inland Orange County. As far as a ten day weather report, it will be 85 to 90 degrees daily, and that is not walking around weather. Waiting for the bus, does not sound good either. Those of us that live in So Cal have different ideas about hanging around in hot weather and an A/C car, station wagon or a windowed van is worth it. Forget the bus. Hanging around in those covered bus stops is not worth the effort. You will be hot and the whole bunch of traffic will be sending hot traffic air blasting towards where you will be walking and sitting waiting for the bus. Plus, the bus may be over crowded and even with A/C it is not the best place for a group or family. Not all routes to destinations are handy, either. Jnaki My wife and I were planning on going back to her old house, high school, work place and the general area last week. But, the hot weather inland deterred our trip until it cools down and the summer traffic dies down quite a bit. So, if So Cal locals would not go to that inland area, we definitely would not just “walk around” in hot weather. It will not be an enjoyable environment for everyone in your group. The Disneyland parking lot is an adventure in itself with the massive amount of cars daily. But, if you get stuck on the outskirts of the lot, get ready for a long, hot walk to the gate. We used to have one of us walk to the car, drive up to the gate and load everyone in the cars. But, we did this at night when it is cooler, but not 80 to 90 degrees temperature. You want to enjoy your visit. But, it seems like a rental car/van or station wagon is worth the effort and cost. Minimal to say safe and sane in this coming week’s hot weather. Plus, some bus stops require walking to get there, waiting for the bus and then walking from the distant bus stop again to your hotel or motel. Time and family comfort will be appreciated, especially in hot weather. Note: Everyone has given you plenty of cool places to go visit, but we are all thinking of driving to a nice parking spot close by and then walking into the event. Have you ever ridden a bus full of people after waiting for what seemed like forever for the bus to arrive? In hot weather? Even if you take the bus to nearby Huntington Beach for a Donut Derelicts event on a cool Saturday morning, it will take a long time and not all bus stops/routes are conveniently located. YRMV A car, station wagon or van is a necessity not a roadblock. It is and should be a part of the traveling family's functioning for a nice vacation. If a day at the beach is planned, yes, a bus will get you straight to the beach in Huntington Beach via Highway 39 or Brookhurst Street. But, that is a long way to sit in a crowded bus to and after everyone is tired, a long way back to your motel.
