My stock rear had wore out axles at the hub. Wasn't worth fixing mine with a V8 rear available. Also b-bob, the center drive shaft measured 48 7/8". With a 50 5/8" torque tube. I didn't clarify that in my last post. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thank you again, I think I could do the outer shaft myself, but I am thinking the center shaft would have to be machined on the end. They don't just cut and weld it do they? Then again it is just a stock 4-banger.
Get a 33-34 Ford driveshaft. The pinion splined end is pressed into the shaft and then welded from the factory. Basically, undo what Ford did, shorten, repress the coupler back in. You may have to clean up the part of the coupler that is pressed into the tube. Best to do the job on a lathe so you can monitor straightness while welding. Make sure not to use too much heat, the splines can be damaged in the coupler. Keep in mind what rear you are using as far as spline count. I used a 35 that has 10 splines. Yessir, no reason for that aftermarket stuff those young whippersnappers use. Standard Issue, look to be the right recipe for that 'Classic Roadster Tilt'! Love this project, helped a friend do up his restored '30 his wife bought him in '76. It was a black car, full fendered, SBC, but sure was clean to work on. (just like a new 'A' roadster!)
