I know Nick.... I had a bitchin’ Dixco that took a crap and had the Yazaki laying around....freezes at 2k sometimes. The Bosch I picked up cheap. Geezus, pricing vintage tachs left some sticker shock....I’ve been looking for another Dixco, but it will have to wait until funds allow...

I like the look of the Yazaki. If you're really like it and you have some $, you could send it out to a speedometer repair shop and have them upgrade the electronics. I did that with mine. Can't remember the name of the company right now, but they did a nice job

Well, valve guides worn out…it’s time for the valve train change over to the one piece guides and new springs….
I’m replacing the clutch and pressure plater too. The pedal started thumping and there’s a scraping sound too….I’ll see what it looks like when I get in there… hope everyone is having a great evening!!

  7. Is this an over the winter project, or will you wrap this up quickly for some autumn cruising?

Well…she’s out! I’m hoping my order from Reds for the kit isn’t on backorder, it didn’t say it on the listing in the eCatologue, but it’s says it’s still “pending” and my account hasn’t been charged yet…that’s usually bad news! I’m calling them Monday to see what’s up. In the meantime, it’s time to continue with disassembly….hope yer all enjoying yer weekend!

No wonder the pedal was thumping….

I’m going to insert it. I trust those more than helicoils, especially in this application…

The thing that gets me Cliff, they had to drill the hole larger to get that screw in there!

Thread repaired! Can’t find my aligning tool so I had to order another one… Picking up a seat grinder over the weekend and I can get started on buttoning this thing back up! Hope everyone is having a great night!

  16. Can't see it in your picture; but were you able to counterbore the insert for the shoulder on the pressure plate bolt?

All seats ground to center valve with guides and seats. Everything installed and lash adjusted. I’ve also made a pointer for my TDC timing mark. Now to clean surfaces and get the heads bolted on so I can get this thing back in! I’m trying to understand why the valve train was all clapped out when the rest of the engine looks so fresh… anyway, back at it tomorrow after some chores and hopefully ready to go back in by the end of the day. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

  19. It looks to me like the carbon on top your pistons is whacking the heads . . . do you see a "witness" marks on the heads? Given your old valve guides, it was probably pumping quite a bit of oil into the combustion chambers - so clean the tops of all your pistons before reassembly.

Those marks are from the hone I used to deglaze the cylinder walls. There’s some extra carbon from some mix from my outboard I ran through it. I knew I was taking it apart so I ran about six gallons through on my last cruising weekend. Oddly enough, it barely smoked :D Thanks for your concern and input!

All tidied up and ready to go back in! New clutch, throwout bearing and return spring. Can’t wait to feel this thing the way it SHOULD run. It displayed flashes of brilliance only to return to it’s sleepy acceleration in high gear and really “grainy” exhaust tone…if you know what I mean… Will have updates. Thanks for stoppin’ by…Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Tomorrow after work we make fire!!! Just need to swap the primary carb out and put the floor back in. Like I said, this thing showed flashes of brilliance only to return back to it’s running issues, it was just really sleepy and just wasn’t smooth with that sweet exhaust tone. When I discovered it drawing a vacuum at the dipstick tube, it made sense because it felt like the intake manifold leak I had in my truck. Of course I’ll be taking video of the road test and try not to get too excited when it flashes that brilliance….permanently! :D:D Thanks for checkin’ in fellas!!

I’ve made my own main jets for my secondaries for after I swap my primary carb… It figures we’d get an all day rain on the day I’ll be ready to drive it! Don’t care, if it’s only drizzling I’m taking it out! Hope everyone is having a great day!

Those look like Holley jets...or are they different? I was just curious, but either way, great job on making them!
