Give me a Ford any day!

Where it gets expensive is in the repaired to the block during rebuild. Opening up a flathead can be like a box of chocolates --you never know what you're going to get, yourself into. Sure, if everything is fine and you just need a hone, it's cheap. But that never happens!

i wonder how many running flatheads got recycled during the 70/80s/ i know my dad ditched the flathead and wishbone suspension for a nova front clip/302.. wish he would of been the collector type.. i could of had access to some cool stuff.. but atlas he was no farmer/collector type. if you ever lived in farming country y9ou will get the reference to farmers.. heh they save everything :)

Is not a hot rod, La Galera was a racing car piloted by Dante Emiliozzi (born January 16, 1916 in Olavarría, died January 24, 1989) was an Argentine racing driver. He won the Turismo Carretera championship four times.

Here in the U.S., the most common engine in a rod is a V8, with the SBC probably being used more than any other single engine, with maybe Fords being second. The flatties have never been without their fans, but are not really all that common here in the southeast. For looks, though, it really is hard to top a full-dress flattie, and this coming from an inline six fan! ;)

The Ford sixes have a small but loyal following here, especially for those cars like the Falcon that they came stock in. Many are converted to V8's, though. Interestingly, in Argentina, ya'll have a hot varient on the small Ford six. The later Falcons had a 12 port engine, maybe 221" or so, similar to the Australian 2V engine from the early '70's.

And I have to mention Juan Fangio, who did a lot of racing using Chevy and GMC inline sixes before he went racing in Europe.

    Later, *****6

Precisely, it's not about the power you can get from a flathead. Of course you can't beat a modern overhead engine with an old Ford V8. There's a lot of nostalgia involved and it's great.

In fact we are very nostalgic around here, that's why we are still running falcons and Nova's in turismo carretera. That's why they still ran coupes from the 30's back in the 60s.

    from somewhere

i've heard people on the HAMB who lived through the glory days of hotrodding say that kids wanted nothing to do with flatheads back in the days unless they were built up bonneville salt flatheads. They were expensive, they wern't easy to maintain and they didn't throw much power. Kids were using other engines like the Nailheads, Olds Rockets, etc. The "idea" that all ford hot rods, etc should be running flatheads is the idea of today's younger generations of hot rodders. Thats what I've heard right here on the HAMB.

We chose not to use a flathead on our '36 coupe because they are few and far to come by in our area. If you want something cheap and stock it's been sitting out in the woods for 50 years. If you want something useable and running it'll cost you a pretty penny. On top of that you have to spend a ton ofmoney to get any power out of it and to dress it up to make it look any bit different than the guy next to you at the show.

We chose a Nailhead because they are traditional hot rod engines, theyre reliable, easy to work on and maintain, and very little are seen at shows. We're excited about the Nailhead and we're glad to be different

Im growing sick and tired of seeing an SBC in every car no matter where you go. they ****.

    Calm down, missy:D

You are thinking about this all wrong. SBC's do not **** at all, the problem is that when we go to rod shows, there are not many cars that run the older motors. So, if anything ****s, it would be the lack of old time motors.;)

So, you and many others, are going to fix that issue, right?

And there are several things you'll never get,
number one is that it's all about torque

Huh this thread came back. My current flattie cost me 7$ for a replacement valve and $200 on misc stuff. Up and running just fine. No over heat issues and solid oil pressure. Now I'm not doing 10sec 1/4s but that's not what i had in mind anyway. Good power.

If you have to ask then you will never know.

Small block chevys are great motors, got a bunch in my ot cars.

If your reason for not running a traditional Flattie is horsepower then you should also consider independent front suspension. they handle better than straight axles.

now let me get off my soap box and start replacing my water pumps....

The video of those fellow starting up the "La Gallera" racing car was so cool. The white haired guy looked like he was brought to tears when he heard that healthy Flatty roar to life. Thanks for sharing those.
