Can you angle mill flathead heads to increase compression without having to worry about the valves hitting the top of the chamber? It seems at some point that the head bolts or stud nuts would become a problem. Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You can simply mill them flat then add some clearance over the valves. Flatheads are tricky; Jerry Branch got more power out of Harley KRs by improving flow at the expense of compression.
yes, they do angle cut them, lots of threads at the barn about it. better combustion is the result. 50 thou clearance over the valves, and i forget the angle, tubman will chime in, he knows
The problem with Ford flatheads is the block (ports) can be as big of an impedement to good flow as the heads / valve area, especially on the exhaust side of things. The HD KR didn't have that problem, but 60 hp out of 45 ci is, without a doubt, the gold standard for flathead engine performance. That is equivalent to a 320 Hp - 239 ci 8BA and HD did it running 6:1 compression. Look up the work Mark Kirby did 20 years ago or so when he had Motor City Flatheads. He published a ton of info on the air flow characteristics of the flathead, most of it is still very relevant.
