I am getting ready to fire off my newly rebuilt 235. I was looking into adding an oil filter in the future, but for now I just want to break the engine in. I have an oil pressure gauge hooked up to one of the ports, and with the engine primed with oil I am getting 40+ psi running the pump with a drill down the distributor hole. Is the port that I am pointing at just a return for the oil to drain back into the engine after it is filtered if a filter is being used? It seems to just go through the block with open space behind it. Can I just put a plug in it for now?And yes, I know to not let the ground cable lay against the exhaust. It will be tucked away neatly before lighting the engine off. This is just a test stand to break in the engine.

Yes, just plug it. Really wouldn't bother adding the byp*** type canister.
Linkage finally cleaned, on the way next week ...

Awesome Ted.....thanks for everything. That is the answer I was looking for. I was on the fence about the filter. I will just keep the oil changed. Byp*** filtering doesn't do much for me.

For what it's worth we have a 55 BelAir my mother in law bought new, given to my wife in 1970. We had the 235 rebuilt a few years ago, still running with over 250,000 miles on it. No filter, oil was changed every 1000 miles (Wolf Head).
We used a Comp Cams cam stock grind, and they now offer lifters (long story, I was told they had 2 different size lifters that year. Adjustable rockers, I back each one out at slowest idle I can until it taps then 3/4 turn in.
We don't drive it much so 1000 mile oil change is fine. I'm a Rambler guy, but I love that car...and that 235 is great . I did modify the timing cover a little by drilling, tapping bottom two holes so now you don't have to drop oil pan just to remove two bolts.

  5. It’s been proven a byp*** filter works

Since they were byp*** anyway and the oil feed for pressure is right there, get a Frantz TP filter.
