I recently put in a 235 from a 62 Impala in my 35 Chevy Standard Sedan. The motor came with a 3 speed manual transmission with overdrive. Borge Warner, I think. I got it all in, but it’s not right. A couple things… The upper left part of the “X” on frame is in the way of the linkage on the transmission, making it impossible to connect. Also, I didn’t think the car was that narrow, but the shifter, when hooked up right, shifts where my leg is… almost in the middle of my lap! My questions are, do I need the X on the frame? Can I cut it out and maybe box the frame and put in a cross beam somewhere for support. And what do I do about the shifter? Do they make some sort of off set shifter, or a mount to move it to the top of the transmission? Did any of that make sense? I’m new at this
Hacking the X member out of the frame is not the way to go. The whole car will twist over bumps in the road, letting the doors bang around in their openings, other joints come loose, and stress cracks develop in different places. If you have the talent and fabrication skills, you could alter the center of the X to fit the bigger trans through. But if you are asking about this I’m just guessing that it may be beyond your comfort level. Make sure to show pics and ask advice before cutting.
