Hey guys and gals, I am trying to wire up a new fuel pump for my stock 1950 Desoto. As most of you know, it has the 6 volt positive ground. The car does not have a fuse panel, just a couple circuit breakers that are pretty full. Temporarily, I would like to wire it up to something that is on with the ignition keyswitch but have a toggle to run it so I can control when it is on or off. Once the car is closer to being on the road, I will add the oil pressure or inertia switch.
Questions: Are all toggle switches ok to use with the 6 volt system? Are the oil pressure or inertia switches ok to use with the 6 volt system? Is it ok to wire it to the keyswitch or is there a better place? Any and all advice is appreciated-thanks!

Having the circuit controlled by the ignition switch is better than not doing so. Do the instructions indicate how many amps this pump draws? The answerr to that will allow a better decision as to the switch (after the ign sw) needed to operate the pump. However, regardless of the amp draw, the following would suggestion would be worth considering.

Six volt components use roughly twice the amperage of twelve volt versions. so, for example if the pump draws 6 amps, you may want to run the pump through a relay. You culd use a six volt horn relay for that if you can't easily find another for that purpose.

Using a relay is desirable because the heavy load (the six amps) goes only through the relay and the much smaller amount of current used to trigger the relay goes through your ign switch and toggle switch. You would use an inline fuse from the battery to the hot side of the relay main terminals, then a wire from the output side of the relay to your pump. The trigger circuit of the relay would come from your ign sw, through an inline fuse to your toggle sw then to the trigger terminal on the relay.

safe....all circuits are fused.....easily controlled by the switches.......minimizes loads on the ign and toggle switches..........
