Ive searched other threads on this, read all the links, and I cant get a clear answer on this. On a 3 wire GM 12si or 10si alternator does the #1 terminal (dummy light terminal) have to to be hooked up for the alternator to work properly? Will it work with just hooking up the the 12v ring terminal to the batt, and jumping the ring terminal to the #2 (sense terminal)?
Here you go mat, This pretty well explains how they work. http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/Delco_Alternators.html
Clear answer: All three wires need to be hooked up. You can run the #2 terminal to the threaded BATT post, but then you're only sensing voltage at the alternator, not at junction block, so the alternator won't account for any voltage drop in the wire harness. Of course, I've done it this way and the alternator works fine. The #1 needs to be hooked up for the alternator to turn on. The easiest way to do this is just to run it to the GEN light. If you don't have a GEN light, then connect the #1 terminal to a switched +12V source with a 35 ohm resistor in the wire (which duplicates the resistance in the GEN bulb).
i've used a 194 peanut bulb in line and basically made a dummy light. you have to have something in there, or you can't turn the motor off.
Its an after market chrome alt that's in a custom application. There is no factory dummy light any more. The car came with the alt so I dont know much about it but the battery is connected to the + ring terminal and jumped to the sence terminal, the excite wire is not hooked up and it appears to be charging! I'm trying to figure out if its ok to work like this? Is there anyway to tell if this is a 1 wire alt?
