Are your K-member and front crossmember in the stock locations? I know with the A frame the 34 is too short. Link to Mike's correction: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58724&highlight=book&showall=1
I built my '32 frame using the dimensions given on page 33 of the bishop/tardel book. Is the length wrong for '32 frames also? thanks,
I think you'd need to measure to be sure (obviously) but I think a 32 wishbone is 47 inch, about what you'd need if your dimensions are the same as in the Bishop and Tardel book, and a 33/34 is something like 45. Keep in mind this only from what I've read, I'm going with hairpins.
so I'm looking for front juice brakes, the rears came on the rearend. The guy who I got the axle from had some brake parts lying around, and I seem to remember there being some drums with grooves on the outside... does anyone know what year they are and if they're juicers or not? thanks,
Well not really a big update, but I got some cool stuff yesterday! I met an awesome guy that totally made a certain 16 year old's year(thanks Ken!)!!!!! I paid $100 for the deuce shell(kinda rough), other than that it was all free! An old dropped axle out of a '34 roadster, front juicers and round spindles, an original Offenhauser two pot(!), bomber style seat belts, and what I think is a Stewart Warner gauge panel(!!!) I'm sorta in a parts collecting stage right now so I haven't done much worked on the car, but tonight I put the brakes on the '32 axle. (oh yeah and I smashed my thumb with a 3lb hammer, OUCH!!!) please tell me what you think! thanks
well I've been working on getting the car rolling a little bit recently, and RIGHT as I was about to get the frontend rollable(putting the wheels on), I find that the drums I have were at one point redrilled for another bolt pattern!! oh well!!! I'm gonna be working on it a lot the next bit of time so there WILL be updates!!
Ok so its been a while.... I have been working on the roadster(I need to sell one of the two bodies I have, I tried to sell the roadster but its so rough nobody would even make an offer so I decided to see if I can fix it!!!). It has really beat-up/rusted/hack-job repaired subrails(which it's welded to out of whack!), so I decided to start fresh with some 1 1/2" x 1/2" 16g square tube, formed to the shape of the top of the rails. There will be 3/4" x 3/4" uprights that the rear quarters will be attached squarely. I have one side all cut and welded, about to start the other soon! Enjoy!
thanks carter! I was kinda not sure about doing them this way, but my budget is tight, and I'm thinking about channeling the body about 3/4" to get rid the frame gap, so I think doing new subrails will make it easier!
update: I worked on the sub-rails this evening and got the passenger side pie-cut and all tacked up. next is to fully weld the top and sides, grind for a good long time, then make some cross-members. once I have the two sides attached to each-other I can flip it over and weld the bottom. thanks for watching!
well last night I got the pass. side welded and mostly ground down, and also got two crossmembers tacked in. The camera I was using decided it didn't want to turn on yesterday(its kinda old), so I'll post some pics whenever I can. thanks
well heres what I've been doing lately, got all the cross members welded to the sub-frame, and made my roadster body into smaller pieces!! My idea is to start by getting just the rear quarters on the frame and square, and then attach the cowl in relation to the quarters......... so today I cut the rear of the body off the sub-frame, then set it on the frame and got it centered. I still need to move it back about an inch(tomorrow) and I also made some body mounts for the front of the quarters, still need put a gusset on them and weld them in tomorrow! please tell me what you think! thanks!
thanks jason!!!! ok question time.......... the spring hangers on my '40 banjo rear have the old metal bushings still in there, I've spent a lot of time trying to get them out and there being a pain....... anybody have any ideas on how to get them out? thanks, Joe
Wow, I'm pretty surprised there aren't more commentators on this thread. Dude, you must've done some charity work or something because you're scoring HUGE on some of the parts going into this rig. I'm pretty excited to see the body mods since you only posted a couple A Models (well-known) ones, at that. You may have already seen it but look up Kevin Lee's Model A chop. The car isn't finished but, holy hell, it looks mean sitting still. Keep up the good work.
Oh and as far as the sleeves. I used the same method as Elrod except I thinned the sleeve with a drill bit. That was after the 45 minutes of cuss-filled hammering to get the cut-off bolt out of it.
