OK so I have a 29 model a banjo rear, and a 39 banjo rear. I plan on swapping the rears and modifying the spring to allow the 39 to mount the way the 29 did. The 39 rear has the five wide bolt pattern. and Id like to run the stock 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern. It just so happens I have a 41 front axle im not going to use. Is it possible to run the 41 front axle hubs and drums on the 39 rear banjo? Ive seen some people say the rear brakes are the same except just a little bit wider ? so as long as the pads have the contact space it should be ok? or am I missing something here? thanks all
Front hubs are front and rear hubs are rear. Brake drums swap to the appropriate inside(42-48) or outside(40-41) mount front or rear hubs. All rear hubs from 40-48 will work all rear ends from 1928-48. Hydraulic brakes on early Fords split into 2 groups of backing plates, 39-41 which have heel adjustment bolts and 42-48 which have fixed heel shoes. The backing plates bolt on to all rearends from 28-48 and with spacer rings to 28-36 spindles. The 39, 40-41 & 42-48 rear hub/drum assemblies bolt on to all 28-48 rear ends and the front hub/drums bolt onto all the spindles 28-36 with proper bearing spacers and directly to all 37-41 & 42-48 spindles.
The fronts and rears have the same drums but the hubs are different. The front hubs mount to the spindles with two bearings and turn freely. The rears are attached to the drive axles with a taper fit, key, and nut. The hubs are not interchangeable.
I see so If i can get some rear hubs in the 40s range I should be set with the front drums I have. Does this mean the high five brakes work in the 5x 5.5 drums?
Your best bet is going to try to find a set of 40/48 rear hubs and drums. 40/48 rear hubs are swaged to the drum and a real pain to change. Good luck with the conversion. ..............Jack
