Hi guys, First off,I am new to building so please be patient. Second, if this specific topic has been dealt with, please let me know the link. I inherited a 33 sedan. It is an old hotrod that was running 4 wheel drums with a solid front axle. Prior to getting it, the previous owner decided to switch the front end to an independent with discs. The pedal is soft and even on gravel, it won't lock up. There is no booster, have a new Wilwood MC, 2 lb up front and 10 lb to the back. For the life of me, I cannot find a proportioning valve. The previous owner said the car stopped quite well on the drums....I know, why change. I have been reading up as much as I can. Would a proportioning valve have been used on the previous config and was missed when installing this? Would the lack of proportioning valve likely attest for the issue? Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.
soft pedal............. sounds like air is still in the system, but without more info it could be a number of things. ie: M/C too small etc.
If it is a single piston, single reservoir master cylnder the bore could be too small, also Ian ***uming the brakes have been properly bled...no residual valve is necisary to the drums hoWever 2-10 lbs residual valves are good for disc brakes....
why do brakes need to lock up? have you traced the lines to look for a proportioning valve? if one not inline then install one. post some pics.
That has been a wonderment of mine too. I suppose that is a backwoods method of telling if they are working but stopping where you expect them to stop the rig and stopping in a straight line every time is a hell of a lot more important than being able to lock up the brakes unless you are in the habit of locking up the brakes and sliding into Bubba and Cooter's yard sideways all the time. The last time I locked up the brakes on one of my rigs the rear end came loose and the truck spun and then went over a bank and rolled three times so I am not too big on getting the brakes to lock up. I am big on stopping on time in a straight line every time though. I'm like the others though in that air in the lines, wrong size or volume of master cylinder or possibly a pedal ratio that isn't the best could be possible causes. If the PO didn't change the master cylinder that is where I would be looking as the cause including a pedal ratio that may not work with the replacement master cylinder.
