Another channeling question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Harkins, Jan 16, 2007.

  1. There will be a lot of these questions from me in the next few months as I prepare to do my first channel job. I gotta thank all those who have already helped me out and gave me some pics. They are really helpful. My question today is after channeling your vehicle what did you do about the steering column? Did you just leave it in the stock position or did you change the mounting of the steering box to lower it. Or did you just buy an after market steering column? If so what are some decent companies that make them? Thanks again for all the help and all the future help. This forum has already taught me so much and I've only been here a few weeks now.

leaving it in stock position will find the wheel way up in front of the screen.. Moving the box isnt required since your not messing with the suspension just dropping the body over the frame..

My solution, keep the box in its original position, remove the outer colum, chop the inner colum fit a UJ to the stub on the box, shorten the outer colum and remainder of the inner, ( the outer will have to be shorter than the inner)

machine a bush to fit in the bottom of the outer colum to support the inner colum, attach the inner colum to the UJ you fitted to the box..secure the outer colum at its base to the cowl/ floor having selected the drop at the dash thqt suits your seating requirements... In a nut shell... thats it ..

years ago , we rotated the box a bit by just removing the bolts and drilling new holes if the drop isnt too great , just enlarging the holes with a file, in the direction you wish to rotate the box , may do it this was all in the 1950s before u joints were available good luck

OK so are you gonna run it fendered or seriously channeled as per the oh so sweet 36s that run around, If your going that seriously low you could consider cowl mounted forward steer set up.. that way less fight for pedal space..

Sounds like you are going down the same path as i am with my '46 Ford truck. It will be HEAVILY channeled.

  9. Well the other day I found out that in Massachusetts any vehicle before 1949 does not need any fenders so I am not going to run fenders. The frames been shortened A LOT so I want to channel it as much as I can. Here's a pic to show how short it is.
