Hot Rods Another deuce build thread but hopefully different

  1. Some progress this afternoon. Blasted the backing plates for the juice conversion. Starting with the rears, I drilled the mounting holes to set the wheel cylinders upright. I have rebuild kits for the wheel cylinders and will play with them shortly. Also blasted the Ford green off the cylinder head and gave it a couple of coats of yellow. It is now an official Winfield yellow head. Still trying to hunt down hubs for the front and rear.

  2. That is a Beautiful Winfield Head.
    Did he do them in different colours to signify different compression ratios or ?

    I like your ideas and approach to this build. Will be following it with interest, and look for you at the next Deuce Days!
     
  4. Red was 7-1, yellow 6-1 and there was an 8-1 which was called a Super Winfield.

    Very kool. What are you going to do with the Front axle, leave it or drop it? Did I miss that part of your story?

    I like the fact that you are researching to do it the right way. Filling your head with old info is cool.
     
  7. I would like to drop the original eventually. Right now concentrating on gathering all the parts to get it on the road. Seems to be a stumbling block on hubs. Swap meet season has arrived so hope to score some parts.
     
  8. Managed to score an early Mallory cast distributor with 2 piece cap this afternoon as well as some brake clips.

  9. Moving along and still gathering parts. Finally found some nice hubs from a HAMB member and hope to see them shortly. Have a list of items for the next couple of swap meets and relying heavily on here as well as the "barn" for parts. I have been lucky and not sure how people built cars before the internet.
     
  10. Had the "stones" mounted on 35 Ford wires. I bolted on the rear backing plates for the juice conversion after modifying them so the cylinders would sit level. Grease retainers are original 32 parts as the 39-48`s would not sit properly after relocating the holes in the backing plate. Installed front and rear springs. Awaiting hubs and need to assemble the brakes to take it off the stands.

  11. Remember you are going to need adapters when using the wire wheels and hydraulic drums. They will bolt together but you will have cracks in time.

  12. Ordered them with the drums Charlie after reading several posts on that problem.
     
  13. Progress is good and have the front juice brake backing plates installed, hubs are in the garage and awaiting oem bearings for the rears. I have to replace the studs for the MT products Lincoln style drums and will tackle that shortly.
    Awaiting the arrival of a Vern Tardel MC bracket so I can tackle the pedal geometry.
    No luck with the 4 broken studs in the block with the welder and have a member on Canadian Rodder, http://canadianrodder.com/forum/index.php helping me with a set of drill guides this week.
    Finally found the 39-48 top load, closed drive shaft, donor transmission for the gear swap into my 32 box at a local swap meet. Need to do the research and buy the appropriate literature on overhauling it as well as making it fit.
    To push me to the finish, I see that the payment has gone through for my registration for Deuce Days, plus confirmed it with Al this afternoon.

  14. Not much of an update and still moving in the right direction.
    We are somewhat back on the ground. I had to re drill the hubs for larger studs to work with the MT products Lincoln style drums. After reading horror stories regarding the offshore quality of bearings, I sourced an NOS and an excellent used, pair of rear hub bearings. Still need to deal with the wheel cylinders and have an original 39 master on route. Also found an NOS set of points as well as rotor for the Mallory distributor and need to ship it off for a cleanup.

  16. Had some real success today and with help from CDNflatlander on canadianrodder.com , who made up some drill guides, along with 4 hours of my time, I got the 4 studs out of the block. :D:D:D
    Real progress that has held me up so now I can move forward. Next I will pull the motor as well as the transmission so I can cram the 40 gears inside. I will also pull the cam and have it ground for a few more ponies :cool:
    Counting down the days to Victoria...
     
  17. Sorting through my shocks and looks like I have a real mix. Rears are unidentifiable, front left is model a and right is 32. Front right is not froze and should come back to life with the right oil. With that in mind looking for replacement shocks as well as rear arms. Located a nice 35 wire as one of mine was pitted so will swap it out and use it as a spare.
    Another mock up of the Winfield head, Strombergs and NOS Champion com 7 plugs I plan on using.

  18. Nice old truck, doesn't need to be smoothed out its a truck.

    If you look at old photo albums instead of at books written by people who were not there you will find that one of everything got rodded and or customized before the war. Your truck will be a fine example.

    For the genny if you want it to look original all you need are 12 volt fields and a 12 volt voltage regulator. You can use the original genny with the 12 volt fields installed and if you shop around you can find a 12V regulator that your 6 volt cover will fit. A 6V genny converted is a better generator as a rule, they have heavier windings in the armature. You don't need to do anything to the stock starter it will hold up just fine to 12V.

    OK so much for bean wisdom you are doing fine. Love deuce pickups.
     
  19. Spent the last couple of days taking my "B" motor apart and not liking what I am seeing. Motor has had some previous work and it is sleeved, which is probably a good thing. Babbitt looks good on the mains but it is loose in the block. Brass shims on the mains. No shims on the rods. Crank, although counter weighted, will need to be cleaned up.
    I do not know the condition of the block at this point but it will need to be tanked and checked for cracks.
    What to do ?? As much as I wanted the banger, with the cost of fixing the babbitt or installing inserts, I am wondering if I should cut my losses, sell the parts and look at a V8 flattie. Thoughts ??

  21. Thats what I need to determine at this point. Would need to get the block magna fluxed, either inserts or babbitt and the crank cleaned up or machined depending on bearings. Also was planning on a grind for the cam.
    I can probably do well selling the Winfield head, dual intake with carbs, "B" counterbalanced crank, Mallory distributor and possibly the block. All desirable parts and difficult to find in decent condition. Not sure of the going rate on a decent running flattie.

    Are you talking about new to you but used or new rebuilt on a flattie?

    Have to do some research and see what is available as well.
     
  24. Still on the fence about swapping out the banger for a late flattie. This would definitely change the theme of my pre war build but also do not want to invest a wheel barrow full of $$$`s on the motor.

    How about finding another B block ?? There are still some out there, just picked up one
    this past weekend.
     
  26. They may be readily available in the US but very scarce in Canada. Lots of A`s but very few B`s

  28. Sort of unless a banger drops in my lap. At this point I have not committed either way. I would need to sell the parts I have gathered to fund the swap as I don`t have the $$$`s to shelve the banger stuff not being a hoarder.
