Awhile back i came across a 51 coupe, that is literally right around the corner from my house. Well.. after stopping and talking to Mr. Harvey about the car, he told me he was not interested in selling it. He had bought it in 1953 or so and went on to tell me that he had driven the Merc everywhere from NY a few times, Canada, and the World Fair, Louisanas... He ended up parking it in 1969 bought a new car (which he still has) so this is where it sat for the next 40 years.. I ended up leaving my # with him along with MANY others he already had and I would run into him from time to time asking if he wanted to get rid of it yet, and the answer was always "not yet" but ill let you know if i do" WELL 3 years later, this last Tuesday he stopped by and told me it was mine if i still wanted it, and he would take what i had offered him back then!! I never thought in a million years i would end up with it, i was low on the list but after some years passing some #'s got lost, and i got lucky!! You would never know the guy is in his 80's, heck.. he wouldn't let me help get it out of the shed!!! Now if I can only get the old lady to sell me that roadster....:)

Looks good but it's been sittin' for a while. Oh well best of luck with it.

  4. Pretty damn good for sitting since 1969, though.

Squirted some fluid in the Cylinders today, the crank starts to move then gets stuck. figured i pop the heads off and take a look inside. It has some rust in the floor but nothing that couldn't be fixed in a weekend.. I found this stuff in it today when i was cleaning it out, had a nice Sears add from a paper from 1965 too...kinda cool!

Got the heads off the engine and it doesn't look like it's gonna run.:( Either water got down the plug hole or the head gasket leaked over time or the block cracked. All I know is that water sat in there for a very long time. It's already been punched out 40 over and not sure what the max is but I guess I could always have that one sleeved. I'll probably just keep an eye out for another engine or swap in the wifes engine when I put a new engine in hers. I've been 3 for 4 on getting engines to run that have been sitting for zillions of years, so I guess its okay.

OUCH!!!! Looks like a sewer pipe....

  26. :confused:Contrary to some urban myths, not all barn finds can be hosed off and driven around...

The fact that he held onto it for this long in southern CA is amazing...I think any of us would be proud to start with a Merc' that clean...

    Thanks for sharing...

My pops and I had been working on one in the mid to late eighties...Bill Elliot rolled up and bought it.

It was no where NEAR as nice as yours, your ahead of the game. It looks real straight.

255? shouldnt be a problem finding a good motor.

    GOod on you man.

    Cheers and beers
