Let me begin by saying that I have no one to blame for this but me- So now, having said that...I bought what was advertised as a lighly used Doug Nash 4+1 tranny... I asked several questions....the guy replied that he had taken the trans to an "Nascar trans Expert and that together they looked at the gears and determined that it looked almost new inside...very little, if any, wear.....I received said tranny and it did work okay on the bench......Mistake #1...I left feedback before really tearing it down.....I dropped it off for a pro to look at it...He called me this morning saying I needed to come look for myself....I called the guy bought it from, Randy at XXX Racing in Xxxxxxxxx, NC and he swore on a stack of bibles that it was "Perfect, my guy knows trannys, blah, blah, blah.......I just got back from the trans place ....Every Gear needs to be replaced.....all the teeth that engage the input and output shaft are horribly rounded...Its basically junk....just needs a few thousand dollars worth of work to be okay Long story short, eBay won't help, and even Payal won't reimburse more that $200.00 (Mistake #2, trust but verify) I'm eating a $1600.00 paperweight this evening with lots of chocolate.... Moral: There are those who will screw you and smile without a wink of guilty...and secondly (I already knew this, but I was too stupid to get the hint.....) eBay is not your friend I just needed to vent....I hope Karma runs him over in the form of a big Pig truck
Well what you *can* do is sue him in small claims court...do it in Austin or wherever is local, I *think* that's cool with ebay auctions...he won't show, you'll get a judgement, then go trash his credit and turn it over to a collection agency. For 1600 bucks I'd be willing to make the effort. He's a TOYOTA specialist in north carolina?!? Go figure. What did he say when you sent him the pics of those gears? Any chance he'll take it back? and paypal won't let you dispute it as snad? 9 times out of 10 you'll win the dispute, but I've never done anything as much as that , maybe that's what you're talking about 200 limit. Well man that sucks. Im sorry to hear that.
Aren't those pieces just brass blocking rings? Those are cheap. They're not gears. Get another opinion...
Do you think you could do the work yourself . buy a book on rebuilding it. Cant be that hard its already apart, how much are the gears . I learned to build 4 and 5 speed harley trannys ive done a few for peopleover the last 10 years and there all still going as far as i no. and its looking pritty good to me ,
well sled, I've heard that the Nash trans ain't so hot anyway, that they are riding on their reputation of what they were before a sellout of the owner. But, that don't look too bad, the second picture on the right side ain't so good, but you could live with it. Those dogs are what gets you into gear, the sliding hubs engage with them. If they were square, you would have a tough time shifting. The first picture looks kinda normal. for a used trans. If you are gonna dissassemble, you could clean up the burrs, but don't remove any good material. Or just run it. The thing is gonna be real noisy anyway, gear whine from the straight gears, but you knew that, right? Frank
WAIT!!! How did you fund the Paypal payment? With your credit card I hope!! If so, call them, they will do a reversal and make the seller come pick the tranny up if they want it back (or arrange to have it picked up). Spoken from experience.
I'd question the trans pro that looked at it, does he do racing transmissions, because that all looks like normal wear for a pro-shifted transmission. I bet it work just fine other than the normal noise you get from a pro-shifted trans with straight cut gears.
tranny doesnt look that bad at all to me. id run it like it is ,the gears look good itll whine because of the way they are ground but no biggie its a used tranny. now heres where common sense should come to play.........its a doug nash tranny #1 it was built to be abused because it is a hi-po part. #2 they were never put in factory rides so the chances of finding one that was "never raced" is slim to none. #3 its a used tranny so nothing will be perfect. take it apart and replace what ever you think needs replacing and go run the snot out of it.
First off.....Thanks to everyone for the support. There are no syncros in this one...Its a "Crashbox" for clutchless shifting, also new info after tearinginto it....nbd, I can live with that....The 55 isn't anywhere near gonna be my daily driver......Paypal is funded from my bank first....I'm paying off the credit card so I was basically using cash.... I know the pics arent that great....It really does look much worse in person.... It can probably be fixed for $$$, of course....I'm just so tired of gettng suckered again.....It just kinda kicked me in the sack once more....I don't even feel like going back into Austin tonight....I was soo looking forward to going to my first Roundup....Now I just wanna sell everything and find another vice....
And it's not Ebay that's not your friend, it is the guy that sold it to you that's not your friend. Ebay is simply an avenue for one seller, him, to reach a buyer, you, to unload his stuff. I've bought a ton of stuff from Ebay and haven't got burned yet. (I'm knockin' on all of the wood in sight of me right now).
if those are junk synchro's id expect to see a lot more wear on everything else. then again, i don't know what they look like new for these transmissions. get another opinion.
Agreeded, Ebay is not the problem here! Typically, I buy stuff that has no moving parts off Ebay. I stick to Valve Covers, Intakes, Shifter Knobs and so on.
That trans is fine - that doug nash is clutchless and that is exactly how those "teeth" wear. It aint no stock Muncie or Saginaw. The "tooth " when new, is supposed to have a generous peak on it, but god forbid you race the car hard, those teeth are going to wear like they're supposed to. In short, you didnt get taken, and possibly didn't know what you were buying. Your trans guy probably hasn't seen a RACE trans like that before and thinks it should have a bunch of little engagment teeth and brass syncho rings. If that is indeed the case, your trans guy is the one to blame because he's trying to take you for a ride.
I'll concede the fact that D/N trannys and even the clutchless types are foreign to me......So do I just put it back together and see what happens?....There ain't (isnt) anyone else around here who has experience with these who could give me a real genuine expert opinion.....The members here are as close as I can get......
Put it together. don't forget the oil. You can shift with the clutch like a normal trans, or just beat the shit out of it. Have fun. The H.A.M.B has spoken.
nothing is really junk unless its got holes in it and/or scattered on the track in a billion little pieces. bolt it up and see what it'll do. looks like nick_s is offering up sound information.
Driving a "pro-shifted" or "clutchless" trans like that takes some getting used to on nthe street. You know how the gears rotate...?... when the stock gears have all those teeth to bite into there is little to no slop for the gear to "rock" for lack of a better term. With the trans you have there is a lot of space between the slider and the thicker, less numerous teeth.... SO if you lug the motor around town like going from 1st to 3rd or 4th or somthing it'll beat up the trans inside and you'll hear funny noises becasue of the "slop" that the trans has built into it. It's meant to have the clutch pedal adjusted so that the clutch JUST lets the trans slow down a tad in relation to the engine while you bang the gears WITHOUT lifting......ever. A really neat addition to this trans would be an inline or "veti gate" shifter... all you do is pull and push and it goes into each gear- no more H pattern or missed shifts!! If you plan on going fast you bought the right trans!!! I'll trade you a stock muncie for it
Oh yeah, one more thing, I'm not sure if the Nash / Richmond 5 speeds use RTV between the halves or the red anerobic sealer. I wanna say its the anerobic, but check with Richmond since they make that tans now - same thing.
S'more crapola pics...So you're telling me that, although used and mildly abused, they are supposed to look like that? I think I need a drink..... It did come with a V-gate Mr gasket.....
nick s is totally right. thats a clutchless trans, & will look like that after a couple good passes. i wouldnt say its junk at all, build a gasser around it!
So is the next step to eat crow and apologise to Randy at www.brdracing.com/ BRD Racing in Taylorsville , NC ?
Yep! And its good with ketchup! Either way, I'm still a dumbass... But this board rocks! I will talk to him tomorrow.....With my hat in my hand......I guess my expert wasn't so expert......Fortunately I had not gotten nasty with him so I don't have that hanging over me...Being stupid is enough...
id say you should change those parts for the hell off it my freind has a drag tranny and changes them after so meny passes , I think once they go all the way then you start munching the gears . So you should while you have it apart or look into it , i would
