It's not unusual at all for someone to buy something (car, trans, etc) on eBay, then take it to a local mechanic who says it's junk and needs everything. It happens all the time; it's a common thread subject on the eBay Motors discussion board. Most of the time the problem is not the item purchased, but the local mechanic who sees $$$$$.

"I bought this on eBay. Could you check it out for me?"

"I got bad news; it's junk and needs a complete rebuild."

I don't have any experience with a trans like this, but I would trust the guys on here who have firsthand knowledge about it. I hope it works out well for you, and is a lot of fun to drive.

55ledsled, don't call yourself a dumbass. You're far from it. You came to the right place (the power of the HAMB!) to get advice. Smart move, IMO.

I will now make a sacrifice to the HAMB Gods......I will burn a piston to thank them

  4. I sold a car to a guy on ebay. It ran nice, I drove it around a bit. Before I finished it up, a friend came by to help me do a few things. He is a master engine builder. Used to work for Keith Black and build Honda F1 racing motors.
We got it running and he liked the way it sounded. I put it on ebay, and it sells. I drive it a few blocks to the transporter truck, he loads it up. About 5 days later the buyer calls me and says the motor is knocking, no power, overheating, blah blah blah..
I found this hard to believe, but he convinced me to split the cost of re-doing the motor, which was $500.
Don't you think my engine guy would have said something if it was like that? I would not have sold it if was in that condition. How does that happen on a transporter?
So I think I was hosed for $500..it goes both ways.

I just recently helped a friend rebuild a hewland transaxle out of his open wheel racecar (RALT) and thats pretty much how the dog teeth looked on the GOOD gears, we replaced the ones that had almost no teeth left.. I would dissasmble and very carefully dress any teeth that had bits that look like they might flake/break off ,stick it back together and GO. straight cut gears sound cool.

Just be sure and service that trans pretty often. You want to keep the bits out of the bearings. Be sure it has a magnetic drain plug and change fluid OFTEN. While you have it open, get it CLEAN before you button it up. It looks to have at least 60% life left in it. If you actually use the clutch, maybe more.

  9. i watched that trans also. its a race trans and they get a tear down constantly. went with a jerico instead.

Jerico is the heat. Based on toploader Ford. Bulletproof.

As mentioned, those are perfectly normal wear for a trans like that...worn, but not a junk trans.

I have a Doug Nash 4+1 and I love it ,It's not clutchless but it has a little wear on the nubbs ,not like yours and I was told IT WAS FINE ,and it is ! works great with no problems....With that said AS YOU can see , I live in North Carolina and will be happy to help you any way I can be ...........

  12. Put it together, fill it up, and run the piss out of it. I tend to not pull trans's apart until i KNOW there is something wrong with it, otherwise your just asking for problems.

Been there.... I bought a rebuilt 460 and C6 from a guy for $1000... The guy was like my hero with a big farm, a half dozen Ford Mustangs and a garage full of projects, we hung out for nearly two hours... After sealing the deal and bringing it home... The tear down showed that every main bearing was spun and the motor was essentially junk. He lived like 15 minutes away and we both knew a lot of the same people... He wouldn't answer my calls. What an asshole!

I have worked in the car business for about 12 years and watched people lie with a straight face and rob people blind just to keep their wives and kids happy... What a way to live.

I'm getting the feeling your not completely aware of what this trans is designed to do. First it's not made to granny shift and drive (cruise on the street) normally. It's built to pull the lever at full throttle and just tease the clutch, not full release. If you try to drive it like a normal trans it will grind something fierce unless you "snap" shift it between gears. That's why there is so much space between the syncro teeth so a "hail Mary" shift will just slam the syncro drum into the next gear, thus the 'EXCESSIVE " wear your noticing. If your going to do ANY street driving I'd sell it to a drag racer and get a street version if that's the environment your trying to make it live in.

Nick, you hit everything on the head. Many a rodder has been burned by buying a trans only later to find out it was a crashbox. The trans is normal and should work. They're crap trans (all crashboxes not just nash) and I didn't think they were built anymore. Thank the "expert" but you are looking at normal lug wear. Polish any burrs on the lugs and install the trans. Shift the piss out of it, and I would still use the clutch, but bang the gears hard. I really hated the crashbox when I owned one. Next time, get a trans with syncros as you can probably shift as fast. You probably didn't realise you were buying a crashbox. Good luck

If there is a problem, and the payment or item are sent via the US postal service, it could be considered mail fraud (felony). And the postal service can be a bugger to deal with. The only time I had a problem with a Ebay seller, I had mailed my payment. The guy had sent junk. The postal service got it handled the only way they can (mean :D). I was reimbursed in full under threat of charges.

  18. man thats nothing, I've seen much worse. I'd pull it apart and check it over, if all looks ok...run with it.

  19. It looks like just about all the bases are covered about this crash box trans purchase. I enjoy the way Hambers really do, help each other out with advice.

Also a past owner of a DN convert Muncie crash box, not a tranny for the street.
