Another Factory Chevy BBC Holley 4150 Question Double checked everything after rebuilding my Factory Holey 780 vac sec - everything looks good, should be ready to go Starts right up, but it keeps backfiring through the carb when accelerating past idle Any ideas? Thanks!
Not yet - I ***umed that I did since it fired right up, but you know what happens when you ***ume anything …...
Sounds like you need to adjust the pump squirter arm.... .015-.020" clearance from wide open throttle....
If you have no pump shot double check your primary bowl gasket to make sure it has the hole for the pump p***age. also make sure the restrictor under the squirter is free and not stuck in the bottom of the bore.
Thanks for the suggestions! I did notice that the squirter gaskets in the kit were metal instead of cork - looking closely at the photo on Summit's website it looks like Holley changed their design of the squirter to utilize the metal washer in a recess like with the new carbs. I guess Holley would rather sell you a new squirter/bolt ***embly than a $1 gasket …. I'll check them out after church & let you know what I find out
I have not seen cork squirter gaskets in many many moons. I have never seen metal gaskets , now that you say they are metal now also . Kinda looks like I’m in a 3/4 time wrap , stuck there . Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Well, discovered a different issue when I started the car today - smoke, then a small fire in the engine compartment. Put it out (always keep an extinguisher handy!) and discovered a melted starter harness. Was running fenderwell headers for years, then switched to ch***is last winter - I guess that the wiring was too close. Net result - fryed starter harness with (1) conductor welded to header & killed the engine. Removed the fryed wiring & will re-route it tomorrow to avoid the headers all together. My thought is that the intermittent short was causing the backfire - what are the chances that I'm right? Oh yeah, everything looks good with the squirter Thanks
No update - picked up wire this morning to redo the starter harness - had to cut the gr*** since the next two days are calling for rain. Am I correct thinking that the shorting could be the likely cause of the miss?
