To hell with garage display pieces. There are enough of those. Build another car around it and put it back on the street.

I am building up a flatty for my 37. Its an 8BA @.060 over.
I have just spent quite a bit on Offenhauser heads, A brand spanking new Thickstun high rise intake and two of their cool Thickstun ribbed air cleaners from our own Hamb vendor Vaphead.
I am really excited! My plans are to yet spend more on an electronic ignition, generator and some cool plug wire conduits. Bling. Bling. Its been a dream of mine to do this for many many years. I think I'm going to go into the corner now and relieve my anxiety. Would anyone else like to share their aspirations. [IMG]
Oh yea... I feel better now.

Save the broken stuff for the display pieces. If it runs, put it on the road. The thing you need to do is work to a flatty's strength not it's weakness. The flatty looks and sounds cool but face it, the Chev normally has more power and is cheaper.

Don't hide the flatty under the hood of a heavy car. Build a lightweight T-Bucket, RPU or A-V8 roadster or coupe, or a Deuce. Leave the hood sides off for the drool factor and keep it light with skinny tires for the fun factor. [IMG]

Good Choice - He'll go a hell of a lot faster with a SBC

The flatty would be better suited to a small modified

That had to have been a tough decision to make. Both the flathead and the sbc have their good and bad points with the flathead's being less tangible than the chevy's.
Everytime I see one of these "flathead vs chevy" posts or arguments in the publications, I'm reminded of my neighbor in high school. He bought a nice little 40 deluxe coupe with a stone stock flathead in it...drove it to school but hated it's performance. He put a pair of aluminum heads on it and it was sorta better....put a cam and two carbs with dual exahust on it over the period of a summer, while driving it and having a really fun summer. One day, the flathead gave up on him and he told me he was happy it did. He bought a 283 and installed it with a ****** adapter. The starter made a completely different noise and so did the engine...he kinda missed the familiar growly starter noise and the "chuckle" of the flathead....
He knocked aut a few '40 ******s and numerous axle keys before he slid a 327 engine and a muncie 4 speed with a 57 ford rear end. Now, it was a scary-fast car and he loved the newly found power but he always told me he missed the flathead blow-by smell and the flathead noises.....the car was just different.....
He kept the chevy motor tho..........
Every time I fired up the Rocky 33 [TM] I'd get a big ol' smile on my face when that flathead starter would "whirr' over and when the engine would catch and start, I was instantly taken back to those old good times...I'd feel like a kid again, just listening to it run...you can't get that with a chevy motor.
    still..........................

That's right, maybe he's just not man enough to have a flathead [IMG]

The fact that he's having someone else do the work should tell something about the owner right there! [IMG]

  22. Hi Rocky,

I've got an 8BA in my AV8 roadster and have lamented its poor power, poor ecconomy, the price of parts, the **** box '39 ****** its bolted to, its leaky carb and its quirks forever.

But after starting her up and hearing that flathead sound, the rumble and blap blap blap, the way it crackles and pops when your costing down a hill... i dont think i'd swap it for anything.

I dont want to wade into a flat Vs sbc debate, each motor is a legend in its own right - i'm just in love with my flattie. If my first ride had been a sbc powered something, I'd probably never want to switch from that.

Puttin' a Chevy motor in a Ford is like sewing a ***** on Cindy Crawford...yea, you can do it but it ruins the original design! Another Ho Hum Hot Rod on the way...

I can totally understand the desire for more performance, but there are other routes than the SBC. A warmed over nailhead or even a Y Block (and this is coming from someone who HATES y blocks) would be cooler and a step up in performance. Whatever, it ain't my car. That is a *****in' looking flathead too

  27. Rocky, that starter and the exhaust note are the things that stick in my head as well. Hard to beat that sound, wait, no it isnt....................I think a 305 could beat a flatty [IMG]

Seriously, this debate is old and tired. Those of us that have been on the HAMB for years have seen it once a month X the # of months we have been registered. Before the internet, the argument has raged on since 1955.

Can someone please explain why if you pull the very character out of an early Ford, its venerable V8, the thought process immediately wanders across town to the arch enemies parts bin? Yeah I know the Chev is a bit easier to swap, but hell 9 times out of 10 they whack the x- member out and put in Mustang suspension, and do all kinds of major surgery. What the frigg is so hard about using an actual FORD smallblock after all that for heaven's sake???! Don't tell me cause its cheaper, don't you dare tell me its cheaper....what is really cheaper is to buy the Camaro you want in the first place. There seems to be no brand loyalty or sense of stewardship when it comes to cl***ic early Fords. I simply cannot find the logic at all, that's why I like this board because it seems, at least something other than a 350/350 Ford is considered here. Sorry for the rant guys but how many more *******ized Fords before there is enough?

  30. I think Chevy small blocks rule but the sound of a flatty rules too. As far as what Henry Floored said...gotta agree on the whole mustand 2 ****...its gay but if you want driveability and w/e thats cool. Flatty's are neat but if you want to make 300-350 horse you gotta go to great lengths and expenses to do so. SBC's are easiest to get parts for and the speed parts are relatively cheap. Nail's and Y's are cool but speed parts aren't as cheap or prevalent. Chevy smallblocks are the best bang for the buck bar none. I do agree the flatty belongs running in a car...T or whatever. I basically said what others have already said, owell.
