I recently picked up an early flattie that had been in a boat. It has the early aluminum heads with the waterpumps bolted to them and boat type exhaust manifolds. but i'm confused about the intake. The block is not vented so i believe that makes it pre 35. The petcocks are slanted out so that makes it a 33 or 34 I think. but the aluminum intake while it has the hole and clamp for the post type generator that came on the 32, the carb mount is rectangular 4 bolt for a 2 barrel and I've heard that the 32 was only a single barrel manifold. I know Ford built flatties for many applications and was hopeing that someone here might help me ID this beast. Maybe someone knowledgeable about old boats or restorers ? Thanks. Bruce
That is very like the special manifolds shown on Johnson marine converted Fords--but the ones I have seen in an old ad reprinted in V8 Times used the common later generator mount. They mention their "Special Carb", which is a big four bolt like thaty, but do not ID it. Note that the manifold is a 180 degree design of the sort Ford adapted in 1934, not any sort of an altered '32. I think this would set a date here, since the 180 configuration was something new to the industry.
Does the '33 fuel pump fit on there? The back seems like a '32, and when guys replaced the fuel pumps with '33's they always had to notch the boss in front of it for clearance, and yours is not notched. Maybe Johnson made intakes for '32's and '33's.
hi ; is the carb made of brass/ bronze or steel i had a brass one like that and sold a few years back. later kb
Sorry, forgot to include the carb info.It is a heavy dude, cast iron with a pot metal top. On the top it has Stromberg D - 3 Chicago. Stuck the fuel pump up on there.I don't know what a 32 looks like, no markings on this one and no notchs. I don't know what the two humps are for between the filler and the carb either.
That's a late '32-33 type pump. Still haven't dragged out the Stromberg book to see what that thing is.
