I was noticing some of the threads that have been locked in the main forum area. The NASCAR one and the Hunter Thompson one come to mind. Personally, I was glad to see the NASCAR one go away, but sad to see the Thompson one die. But, this site seems to be a lot about the culture, not just the mechanics of the cars. Shouldn't there be an area of the site devoted to this otherwise off-topic stuff? I would call that section of the site "Other ****," but that's just me.

If there's not an area like that, every time someone posts about anything besides their obscure mechanical problem, it will get locked or deleted or whatever. And nobody wants the whole site to read like a boring Haynes manual for old cars, right?

I haven't been around a whole long time, so tell me I'm an idiot. But, I've seen a lot of other message boards degrade into ****piness and I'd hate to see the HAMB lose its mojo.

I tend to agree. More often than not a lot of people become friends out of these forums. Friends don't always discuss the "topic" the board is aimed at.
We need an "Off Topic" forum.

    NOPE! Not needed...

I won't tell you you're an idiot, but if the shoe fits...a forum of the type you describe would simply degrade into political ****, drama, lies and name calling...this site is about traditional hot rods...H.S.Thompson didn't have anything to do with that...neither does NASCAR...

If you want, I'm sure Ryan could hook you up with his Atomic Industry Company and you could start one yourself...

I appreciate whatever everyone has said, and don't disagree with any of it.

Somebody pointed something out in that Thompson thread. They said that when Johnny Cash died there was a lot of talk about it on the HAMB. I wasn't around here at that point. Maybe it was wrong to discuss Cash then. But I can see it where it fits in. It's not like he had anything to do with traditional hot rods aside from the fact that he built a Cadillac "one piece at a time." But somehow there are certain icons that are part of the culture in some indirect way.

Another one that comes to mind was a recent thread about car coats. Somebody asked where you could get this specific type of coat that would be typical for a car club to wear in the 50s. Some people got angry at this sissy thread about clothing. Understandable. But at the same time, I was interested, because it had something to do with the culture.

It just seems like it could be a slippery slope. Before long nobody could ask a question about shift knobs since they're primarily decorative. All topics would be isolated to pre-1935 carburetors and drum brakes. Interesting yes. But all encomp***ing of the culture? No.

Anyway, I like the site as is. Just tossing around some thoughts. That's what this section is for right?

We already have a section devoted to "other ****".
Not hard to find,it's called: "the rest of the internet".

What we do need is a seperate "What color should I paint this ?" section,
one for all the "I'm bored AND lazy.Show me lots of pictures of...." threads,
and another for the "I'm too lazy to use the Search ****on" posts.

We also should have a seperate forum for knitting and crotchet.

One for fondue recipes would be super groovy as well.
