I was leafing through the latest catalog that I recieved a couple of weeks ago looking for a palm nailer because of John Kelly's post on the HAMB. Low and behold they had a couple of options. I looked closer and they even sold a body hammer adapter kit for another 10 bucks. So I picked up the phone and grabbed the plastic. 60 bucks and a few days later it arrived in the mail. I haven't been too motivated on the lander for the past couple of months just due to work and a lack of capital, but since I had a new toy I had to use it. When I created the sides of the body using Model A panels and the 59 Olds panels, the seam shrunk where I had welded it and needed stretched back out so it wouldn't take 1/2 inch of mud to fill the "V" that was created. Granted this tool doesn't give you a hell of a lot of control, but it moves a lot of metal FAST. I used a 12 inch long 2X6 block of wood as a body dolly so I could see how straight the panel was. It took about 5 minutes to straighten out both sides. I have some finish work to do to take out a lot of the small dents that were left but now it won't take near the amount of putty to smooth out the sides. I can see this thing being used for straightening out some wadded up fender or other piece of shit no one would want to fuck with. But that is just the kind of folks we are, I suppose. I only have old before pics so you will have to take my word on it. This pic I took back in december or so when I was just welding the area all together. End of plug, carry on.
That is a damn fine idea that John had! I always wondered what I would use a palm nailer for when I saw them in the Harbor Freight catalog. Now I know. And HF has a real live adapter too? Well, here goes another check to Harbor Freight. That place is the devil. Oh, and here's a link to the original thread in case anyone needs tips on how to put it together: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49784&highlight=John+Kelly Hey, how about a pneumatic foot switch? Does HF have that? I've never seen one there.
They don't have a pneumatic foot switch that I know of. I made one using a sandbalsting gun. The plastic striaght one they sell for about 10-20 bucks. Northern tool is the only place I have actually seen the foot controls. They are listed with the sandblasting equipment but cost about 60 bucks. I'll take a pic of mine when I get home, along with the nailer. The nailer does not need a foot feed though. It somehow senses pressure when you push on it and that is what activates it. All you have to do is hold it up to where you want to pound and push on it and it starts hammering.
foot control - get a cheap air gun/blower, unscrew the nozzle and thread in jack. mount the gun to a block of wood and be on your way.
Someone to ask for free sheee-it is your dentist....most dentists have old equipment in their attics. The dental handpieces run on air with a footpedal. some of the old equipment has some really nicely made footpedals! The new stuff is cheap.....Just like new cars.
Oh, I've got wadded up shit ! THat could be very useful. I always thing metalshaping tools are out of my budget, but it seems like most things can be built easily.
Here is a pic of the smoothed out side and one of my tool in my hand. Like I said, you do not need a foot control for the palm nailer, once you press the hammer to the surface, it just starts pounding. It's pretty cool. I would imagine you can make your own hammer heads, they just thread in. Yngrodder's neighbor wheels and deals in used dental equipment. I got an old foot control from him for my planishing hammer. It didn't work, not enough flow through it.
Is it just me or does the LL look like the plane that Steve Austin (that's the 6 Million Dollar Man for you younguns) crashed? whoa....bad 70's flashback there
Plowboy is the H.A.M.B's Barris,Winfield & Alexander Bros rolled up in one package! First that truck and now this, pretty damned creative.
Is this it http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90193 I really want one just emailed them to see how much shipping would be to Northern Ireland. I checked out their website can't belive how cheap the tools are.
Here's the link for the auto body kit: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92127 Yeah, Harbor Freight is cheap and of pretty good quality. The way I usually describe it to folks who haven't shopped there is that they are great tools as long as you don't mean to use them every day. Not pro quality but good hobby quality.
Actually, if you click on Bigdaddy's link it gives you the part number for the one it goes with. I don't believe the mini one will work with them, I bet you could use John Kelly's carriage bolt Idea with the small one though.
